What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to take the time during Early Access to evolve Ficterra using community feedback. We place a lot of importance on user feedback and will leverage what we learn to implement new and exciting features. There is a list of expanded features to we hope to add too, and Early Access gives us the opportunity to include these in the final version.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We haven't come up with an exact duration yet, but we estimate around 12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have expanded content and features developed during the Early Access. We hope to add the following:
  • More Biomes
  • More enemy types
  • Enhanced Combat
  • Lots of Machines
  • Expanded Modding Support
  • Improved Artwork
  • Workshop Support
  • Steam Multiplayer Server Support
  • Vehicles
  • More Animals

We also plan to include suggestions from the community along with the above feature list.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You can play single or multiplayer on countless worlds. Use various settings to choose how to generate your worlds. You can use the in-game modding to create mods, but we are still working to integrate the Steam Workshop. You can reach Tier 5 of the tech tree and craft many items in game. More items and technology will be added as the game progresses through Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may be raised near the ending of the Early Access campaign.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community involvement is integral to our development throughout Early Access. Given the open sandbox nature of this game, there are thousands of things we could add. We count on the community to give us feedback, and guide us in what we include in the core game experience. Modding is a central pillar of our game design. It lets the community create their own content for the game. We need the community to tell us how we can enable them to make their dream mods come to life. The community can interact with us on our Discord, Twitter, Youtube and the Steam forums.”

Early Access Update 9!

We've added Grumpy Bombs to Ficterra! Watch out when battling these guys, as they tend to go out with a bang!

We also added the Damage and Armor type system to the game. Find different typed weapons and armor to gain type advantage over your foes. The current Type chart is after the patch notes, with damage types as rows and armor types as columns.

Check out the full update notes below!

  • Grumpy Bombs have been added to the game. These little monsters will explode when you reduce them below half health without defeating them. They spawn in the Red Rock Desert, Obsidian Snow Plains, and Maquis biomes.
  • Damage and Armor types have been added to the game. These modify damage based on the types of the attack/spell and the armor of the target.
  • Weapons and Armor in the game have been given appropriate damage or armor types.
  • Monsters and Animals have been given appropriate armor types
  • Players now have the 'Animal' armor type. Wearing equipment will alter your type composition
  • Monsters now make use of the Spell system
  • Explosions now deal damage. The amount is equal to the explosion power.
  • Fixed timing on Golem attack
  • The Impling's attack is now an ability/spell. It has lower cooldown and damage.
  • The Hitbox for the Impling's attack now corresponds to its mace.
  • Shallow water now looks properly removed when picking it up with a water jug. It was picking up correctly, it just looked like it wasn't.

Early Access Update 8!

We've made a ton of performance updates to the game! Loading in terrain should be much faster, and overall the game should feel smoother.

The Water Jug (in the picture) lets you hold up to a cube of water (an improvement over water bottles). It also shows off some new tech we've added. Dynamic icons let us change the icon of an item when its state changes. We can now also store state/data on specific items in your inventory. We use this for tracking the water in the jug, but you can expect to see it for more items in the future!

Check out the full update notes below!

  • Water Jug has been added to the game. This can hold water up to a full cube, and then place it down elsewhere. It can be crafted at the mason station with stone and cotton
  • Dynamic icon tech has been added to the game, currently used in the new Water Jug
  • We now have the tech to save data to specific items, currently used in the new Water Jug. Items that can have this extra data do not stack. We expect to use this more in the future, so stay tuned
  • The World config file has had the 'max savable id' stripped and is now saved in a separate file. This requires saving often, unlike the rest of the world config file (which is fairly large), and was causing a drop in the frame rate
  • Searching for terrain to load now is faster and uses less memory
  • New method for loading terrain files that is much faster
  • New method for saving terrain files that is faster
  • No longer calculate LOD data we aren't using
  • We now only save the 'unfinished sketch' file if there was an actual change, not for attempted changes

About This Game

Ficterra is a sandbox crafting adventure with in-game modding that you can explore solo or with friends.

Ficterra starts you with minimal resources in a world filled with diverse biomes and possibilities. Acquire resources to build a limitless inventory of materials to use to make tools, buildings, and gadgets. Avoid monsters and other hazards while exploring and expanding your world. Each biome offers a variation of landscape and available materials, as well as dangers. Continue to make more sophisticated tools and gadgets. Share with other Ficterra players.

Paint the Town

Don't limit your creativity to just cubes! Use ramps, columns and more to make your perfect creation. Then craft a paint brush and paint your buildings to fit your style.

Explore the World

Each world is a unique blend of biomes for you to discover. Find secret treasures and mysterious buildings as you search your expanding world. Seek out rare underground ores to supply your furnaces. Be sure to bring a light though, its dark down there. Be watchful on your journeys, as dangerous monsters have been known to roam Ficterra. They also seem to prefer hanging around loot chests...

Single or Multiplayer

Journey out alone or bring friends along with you. Multi-player capability allows you to invite others to join your world to explore and expand it. You can even start a world in single player and use it in multi-player later.

Build Gadgets

Build cool gadgets and gizmos like elevators, cannons, pullers, conveyors belts and explosives!

Modding For the Masses

Anyone can make their own mods for Ficterra! We included a built-in mod editor to create your own cubes, items, research and more. You can also take your modding to the next level by using the Unity game engine to include your own textures and 3D models in your mods.
