What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access will allow us to test compatibility and scale and to help guide the development of new features. The game includes a complex and dynamic social economy, the behaviour of which changes as more people are active - so we hope to have players involved early to balance and shape the evolution of the universe.

A tractor currently has one part-time developer - an old chap with limited resources - and so any assistance I can get from the Steam community will be greatly appreciated!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Length of the early access phase will vary depending on time and resources available for development, and the range of issues found during early access play, but will likely be under 35 years.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Initial versions require manual adjustments to the economy and scaling setup to maintain balance as player numbers vary, this would be automated in the full release. During the early access phase the number of players allowed on the world(s) will be limited.

It is the intention to improve existing subgames, implement additional minigames, add new graphics and effects and extend the range of economic activities. A full list of new features for implementation will be maintained in the community area.

Though we have had a good period of closed testing of the general economic and technical systems, the effects of having a wider audience may well lead to new issues which would be addressed for the full release.

One of the biggest differences in the full version will be the availability of separate player-created worlds.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“A tractor has been in development as a hobby project for a number of years, and so there is a huge depth of content within it - however, much is not polished or needs updating. Many subgames such as vehicle racing, pub games and RC drones are incomplete and/or barely tested. Only limited testing of how the systems scale to larger numbers has been achieved.

Some of the game's graphics are currently placeholder and many could do with some additional work by a good artist. (The Art Director position has been open for over a decade! ;] )”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At the moment it is the intention to have the game free to access both during and after the Early Access phase. Purchasable items to provide cosmetic benefits may be available during both phases.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have suggestion forums and will be actively seeking out community involvement in the planning and design of future developments.

Longer term, A tractor would be extended by the addition of player-created worlds with brand new game types and features.”

About This Game

An old-fashioned, semi-serious, social-economic simulation and galactic world construction game combining trading, vehicles, mini-games and blowing things up, which also gives the dedicated few the opportunity to make their own games within the wider universe.

In the starting star systems you'll find a few different planets to explore. Some are long-term persistent worlds that evolve while you're not playing, others are little minigames or places to mess about in biplanes. What you need to do varies depending on what other players are doing and what has been built in the past.
Money and Kudos earnt playing on planets can be converted to galactic credits, which you can use to buy new ships and systems that help you explore the universe further.

If you're feeling creative the game includes a powerful 'World Editor' which you can use to make your own planet and games for other players to find and explore.
