What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access is the best way for me to get relevant feedback and advice. I do believe that by starting in EA, I will greatly increase the value of the final product. I'm a solo indie developer with some outsourced specialists so I need any help that I can get to create the best game I can.
I've been dreaming about a game like this since my first childhood computer, I count on you in helping me.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I'd like to stay here until I'm satisfied with the project. I'd like to release a stable and fun game. The development time will greatly depend on the feedback/bug reports that I get, so I can't promise anything, but I guess it will be around 4 months maximum.
Although this is a very small project I work literally day and night on the game between 12 and 16 hours a day to make you (and myself) happy with the result.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I will polish the GUI and gameplay greatly and expand the features of the game. I will add more kinds of technology, site environment variations and make the game more stable. Please check the included feature list in the description!

Please consider that the EA versions of the game won't guarantee that your saves will be working correctly after version changes.

Also, I will add OSX support and maybe Linux support for the game as well.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“This is an alpha stage of the game. You can start a company and manage its building sites, research new technology and create your own hardware and computers. The world map is done, and a basic AI is also implemented. All of this means that you can play, win or lose a game, but the experience will be different in the end product.
At this moment you don't get reviews about your products and tutorials are nearly non-existent. Also, the balance of the game isn't as good as it should be.
Please read the included feature list in the description!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to gradually raise the price as I ship new content and features. The amount isn't decided, yet.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm very interested in any kind of advice and suggestions about the game. Feel free to find me on Reddit (the game has its own subreddit) or on the official Progorion Forum.
Computer science is a very deep subject and although I'm a passionate hobbyist on the topic, my knowledge is still limited, so I would greatly appreciate any corrections or suggestions about the technology part of the game, too.”

Update about the Coming Changes #3

Hi guys,

I've posted my last announcement a month ago, so it is really time to talk again! Unfortunately (as you can see), I absolutely failed in my original estimates about when I can give you my very next update. I'm really sorry about that, and I just really hope that the coming things will pay off for this as well.

I'm being late because how closely related are my systems in the game. For example, I've already added noise and heat. Heat is generated by hardware elements, while coolers can reduce it. And yeah... coolers often generate noise. But just imagine how many screens must be modified because of these two things? All of the lists, the hardware screens, the computer screens, research screens etc. And of course, techs are touched and the AI algorithms as well.
So, I just can't modify one of them and release it, I have to modify everything and put it out together.

And these are two smaller changes. The research three, the new research system, the new design system is much bigger than that. But I truly believe that with the modifications you will get a much more interesting and more detailed game core - so it does worth it.

I've learned from it. I won't promise new dates, haha! But I really wanna ensure you, that I'm still around and I'm working on Computer Tycoon in full-time. Okay... at least when I'm not moving to a new flat and I don't miss even my internet connection. In the last week I didn't have internet... guys it feels really bad not being able to communicate with ya!

I think most of you are interested in the visual things right now because everything else is laid out in the game's roadmap (feel free to check it out again) here:

The Game's Roadmap

So here are some pics for you! These are not in the game yet, these are only the assets that I and my friend are creating. Lately, he works a lot on Computer Tycoon. His name is Ede László, he made a lot of illustrations about the hardware elements of the game (follow him here: @ede_laszlo).

But here are the pics, they talk instead of me...

So maybe as you remember, you start here in the garage:

Then later you will move to a normal office as you create your first financially successful computers:

That will be the moment when I will open up you the world map as well... and you will be able to hire some more managers.

And the office will improve by time... as you would expect. But you will end up being here:

Hey, I love sci-fi, how about you? :)

The guys you can hire are really not a focus of mine right now, it is much more a chill out activity of mine, but here is some more work in progress:

Maybe you'd like to see your computers in your offices, right? Well, you will (just as you can see it in the second pic of offices), but here they are:

I think these are some of the more interesting pics I can show you (meanwhile I don't wanna show everything of course, but you can see some more offices in my last post). Remember that my main focus is still the design and feature expansion of the game, but showing the new research list (that is just basically longer, has more content - and actually is not final) seems to be boring and uninspirational for now.

The game sold around 8500 copies in its first 6 months. That puts the game into the 1% of indie games on Steam with similar or better results, that is awesome, thank you, guys! Although still, I would highly count on you in spreading the game. Please mention it on your fav. forums and social media sites, because that means a lot for a solo indie dev like myself.

Feel free to text me on the steam forums or on Twitter! Have a very nice day, and love your computers guys!

Your friend,

Update about the Coming Changes #2

Hi guys,

I wanted to show you two new pics to remember you I'm actively working - although I can't release you a new version, yet.

I'm creating the tech three, the balance changes, hardware design changes and so on. I create big excel files nowadays. But when I'm trying to chill out a bit, I'm working on different things. Things that will come only later on.

How do you like these? They aren't final at all, but they give you some feeling about the employee system.

The first pic is a face. I will create as many faces as I can, to give you a lot of possible people to hire from. You will have passive employees and active employees. You will have only 7 active - that will be your personal team. Big corporations such as IBM, Commodore, Apple, Microsoft and so on, all had these kinds of teams, including the CEO and often a partner.

On the second picture, you see where the story of Computer Tycoon will start. Yeah, in a garage, such as it started with Apple or Microsoft for example. You won't have all of the features from the beginning, but I you won't have to wait for too much to get them all. Next, to the fact that this will give a better immersion, I hope that I will be able to build up the gameplay in small steps for the player, that will enable reading less and understanding more.

Guys, don't worry about me, I'm really still here, I just don't wanna rush things out. I hope you like what you see here in this little post.

Thanks for the support, feedback, bug reports and the reviews. They help a lot!

Your friend,

The roadmap of the game:

Oh... and some more pics for you. :)

“Didn’t expect Computer Tycoon to go so further into details, yet it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless. As the Steam debut of a single talented individual called Andris, Computer Tycoon aimed high and didn’t miss its target.”
8/10 – TICGN

“You get a lot of value for your game and you get a developer who listens to the community and tries to improve the game so that as many people as possible can enjoy this game. He doesn’t need to do a lot to make me enjoy this game since I’m already doing that!”

“While this game is still in its alpha stages, and so continues to be improved upon as time goes on, in its current form Computer Tycoon presents a solid, fun experience and I’m greatly enjoying my time with it. It hearkens back to the old Tycoon games with its simple concept while also presenting a fascinating and somewhat difficult business challenge to survive for over half a century in a technology field.”

About This Game

Computer Tycoon is an indie business strategy game about Computer Evolution and starting your own company in the 70s. Lead the research race until 2034, create the best hardware and operating system, take care of your infrastructure and even handle your marketing. Find video game gems to promote them on your platforms, conquer the global market and became literally immortal!

Computer Tycoon is different from other building/tycoon games because it has a "grand strategy game" aspect. You will control your "computer empire" viewing a world map and managing resources.

Start your adventure in the 70s as a small business somewhere in the world. Learn more about hardware and software inventions that were the first steps to our current modern world, and get a taste of what is waiting for us in the future. Find the classic video games and help a new culture to be born.

In Computer Tycoon the decisions you make during development really matter. Take advantage of the technology, upgrade and design combinations! Does your product need more computing capacity or should you focus more on features, low price or prestige? Maybe change to portable computers or develop more easy-to-use Operating Systems? These decisions will have a major impact on the success of your company.

Expand your corporation in a smart way into multiple countries, build more offices, factories, laboratories and other required facilities. Poor countries have cheaper labor, but richer countries will give you more educated engineers.

Having the best product isn't enough. You must take care of people's needs or even "change their needs" using different marketing tools. Balance your budget well between development, production, marketing, and expansion.

We'll all die one day... but not in Computer Tycoon! You can win the game by becoming a monopoly or reaching the technological singularity if you are fast and healthy enough. Healthy? Yes, you have a small chance to die in the game, so you should regularly check your health.

The game is in an EA alpha state. It has bugs and missing/simplified features. Everything is subject to change. Please read the EA details! Also here is a brief list of what is and isn't included (yet):
