What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“One of the main objectives is that the game takes place in a changing and lively world.
Although in this phase of development this world is working, it still does not have the level of depth and complexity that I have marked as objective and the feedback from the community can be very useful to finish developing this and other aspects of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I estimate that Grey Hack will be in Early Access for about 10 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will feature a variety of procedurally generated missions.

It will also have plots and secrets hidden by the world that you will be able to discover and solve since the gameplay will not be limited only to the missions by contract.

The final version will also have a much more complex world and of course a greater variety of hacking programs and techniques.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Grey Hack is in Alpha status as there are some core features to be implemented. Although you can already use several hacking techniques and perform some missions. You can also freely explore the world in single player and multiplayer mode.

The multiplayer mode is functional at the same level as the single player mode. Currently there is only one available online server, although I plan to allow players to create their own dedicated servers.

In the current version, the operating system of the game, including its UI, is quite functional, as well as the terminal commands, available programs and network connections.

Keep in mind that since the game is in its Alpha version, due to development aspects, single player and multiplayer savegames can be deleted in future updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will gradually increase as new contents and features are added.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Initially Steam forums and Discord will be the main sites to give feedback, get to know news, discuss aspects of development, etc.

I plan to follow the forums very closely, as I am very interested in receiving feedback from the community and working together.”

Nightly build status: Introducing the new exploit system

Hi people!
I would like to share with you the latest news about the development.

As some of you know, version 0.7 will bring significant changes in the game. Among them, a scripting system has been added, allowing players to create their own programs to hack and automate actions.

Also a complete renovation of the exploit system is underway, leaving the current versions system obsolete.

The new system is much more dynamic allowing players to find vulnerabilities by themselves using the scripting system.
The programming of the exploits is simple, but now many factors are going to be taken into account so that an attack is satisfactory, from libraries with a specific version installed on the machine, to active connections, active users, etc.

The result of exploiting vulnerabilities will not always give you access to a shell, so it is possible that to realize an attack you must combine different exploits and even social engineering.

On the other hand players can continue to find exploits already compiled in hackshops and other places to use without programming.

With these changes the way to realize attacks will be different, not only because of the use of the exploits correctly, but it will be necessary to prepare each attack gathering information from the victim to know if the attack can be successful, due to the requirements of some exploits, since a failed attack will create a record in the victim's log.

The first iteration of this system is going to be published in the nightly branch throughout this week.

Once it is considered stable, it will be published in the public branch so you can enjoy the latest game additions without continuous wipes in the database, as happens with the nightly branch.

After the public update, the nightly branch will continue with the development of version 0.7 as usual.

More news soon, happy hacking!

[Nightly] Update v0.7.2043a

More info about the Nightly build here.

  • Migrated the following commands to the scripting system:
sudo, useradd, userdel, passwd, aircrack, airmon

  • The game manual has been updated with the latest changes.

  • Fixed several server crashes related to computer logs updates.

  • Fixed exception in the rm command if it was called with the -r parameter but without file path.

  • Now the launch method correctly loads the command with the permissions obtained from the shell that invokes it.

  • Optimized network data sent to client when connecting to a web page.

  • Fixed bug #165: pressing the arrow up button while in the sudo prompt will put the past terminal history string in plain form in the password input area

  • Fixed bug #278: sudo leaves you as the root user even without the -s switch
NOTE: using sudo without "-s" will not work with commands that have not yet been migrated to the scripting system. As workaround login first with "sudo -s", then launch the command.

About This Game

Grey Hack is a massively multiplayer hacking simulator game.

You're a hacker with full freedom to act as you wish on a vast network of procedurally generated computers.

File Explorer, Terminal and Text Editor are some of the programs that will be available from the start of the game. As you improve your skills you will find new utilities that you may install and use.

The terminal has a fundamental role, based on real UNIX commands; it is an indispensable tool for carrying out successful hacking operations.

Online mode: A living persistent world.

Explore the Grey Hack universe and forge your own reputation in a world shared by all players.

When you leave the game, the online universe remains actively running 24/7.

This always active game session means that the changes you have made in any computer in the world can be seen by players who connect to them even if you are no longer online. Your progress will be saved, but your actions may have consequences.

Grey Hack will never have a monthly subscription to enjoy the online experience.

Grey Hack is in the Alpha phase. Version 0.6 has now been completed and development of version 0.7 has begun.

You can check the Roadmap in detail here. You will find updated information on the features that have been implemented, and which ones will be added in the coming updates.

Here is a summary of some features that are not yet available in the current version but will be included in future updates:

One of the main objectives of the development is that each player action influences the world and therefore the other players.

For example, you will be able to act in your own self-interest; even if you cause collateral damage, help the authorities stop criminals or simply keep a low profile and take advantage of the actions of other players.

Another planned feature is the possibility of joining a group of hackers to carry out coordinated attacks, or creating your own group in which you will be able to recruit other players.

Can I be hacked as soon as I start a new game in online mode?

No, to be hacked you need to have open ports in your machine, and for that you have to perform a series of steps.

Some game elements require that you open ports on your machines, but it is not possible for someone to hack a new player who has just started.

Single Player Mode

Grey Hack is intended to be played in Online Mode, benefiting from the richer environment of an always-online universe, but the game also offers a single player mode for those so inclined.

In Single Player mode, you play in a world created on your computer. Unlike Online Mode, when you exit the game in Single Player, the in-game universe stops, and progress resumes only upon your return.

In Single Player mode, during the development, you may experience a worse performance than Online Mode. This is because in Single Player mode all the system load and background processes are performed on your computer, unlike the Online Mode where the same functions are performed by the official Grey Hack server.

I am open for suggestions. If there is any feature you would like to see in the game, do not hesitate to let me know through the Steam forums or the official Discord channel.
