What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The philosophy behind our development process is rooted in the collection of feedback from our users, and the rapid introduction of ideas that serve to make the gaming experience better. Early access allows us to deeply engage with consumers, while supporting the staffing required to get the job done right.

Given that we are empowering users with UGC tools, the early access program also allows us to identify potentially disruptive behaviors and unintended outcomes that could jeopardize the health of our community. Catching potential problems early and redeeming gamers that may choose engage in damaging behaviors in an early access setting will give us a strong standing, and a strongly united and healthy community, come launch.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're looking to release in November, 2018.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will allow for more creation tools, game types, and a robust system of community-curated UGC submissions. This means more creative freedom for our community, but with a commitment to egalitarian principles governed by an engaged and active community made up of people who love to build games, love to play games, and those who love participating in both.

This is taken from the about us page:

Prior to launch, future updates will allow you to build, share, and play new Q.U.I.R.K. game types like:
  • King of the Hill
  • Sports Ball Arena
  • Capture The Flag
  • Tower Defense
  • And the many, many game types that will be suggested and created by our community.

While Q.U.I.R.K. master builders can currently share their levels directly with friends, we are on our way to building a full-featured UGC system using the Steam Workshop. For now, we'll be accepting new UGC submissions for death match arenas directly from the community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

  • Players can choose from an ever-growing, uGen curated list of UGC games to play solo, or with friends
  • Players can play all of our games cross platform on the PC or in VR using the HTC Vive
  • Players can build, share, and play their origninal death-match arenas with their friends
  • Players can submit levels to uGen for inclusion in future updates
  • Players can choose basic gender customization options
  • Players can level all the way up to level 14, unlocking new building assets at each level

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We'll be exploring the appropriate pricing options as we solidify our content updates, customization options, and most importantly the opportunities and expectations defined by the feedback we gather from our community.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community involvement is the corner stone of our development process. The 8 members of our team worked together to create core studio values that are referenced daily as posters on our wall. While we cover topics like Product Development, Working Together, Our studio values on community take center stage, and are as follows:

  • We're developing with the community as a partner, not simply as a consumer
  • We're not afraid to listen, capture, and enact community feedback
  • We are all responsible for contributing to growing a healthy community.
  • We're welcoming, inclusive, and fun
  • We always explain the reasoning behind our choices and design intentions
  • We aren't afraid to publicly admit when we've made a mistake, and will work swiftly to fix it.
  • We are honorable in our dealings and honest in our communications with our community

Q.U.I.R.K. Now Free to Play on Steam!

Hello Q.U.I.R.K. community!

Yup, you read it right: Q.U.I.R.K. on Steam is now free to play! We've had an incredible show of support from our Steam community, and we want to be sure that those folks who purchased Q.U.I.R.K. on the Steam Store know that we haven't forgotten you! There are so many features on the way that we'll need an entirely different post to detail them all. So, for now, let us take a moment to look back on our progress and share how we plan to make sure our early supporters are rewarded for their investment in our game.

The last three months of development have seen a remarkable improvement in performance and stability for our mobile versions. Perhaps more excitingly, we've continued developing the features on that growing wish list we've been carrying around since we began this project, nearly two years ago! It's a wish list that began as a collection of our team's hopes and dreams and that quickly evolved into a phenomenal collection of ideas that came from you directly. Your ideas and requests were so great that we put several of our personal pet features on ice in order to work in your (far better) ideas.

Over the last few months, we've also been working on expanding the way our community is able to play Q.U.I.R.K. Given that uGen is a small indie team, it was necessary for us to focus a lot of our attention on developing those new game features on our latest platform release: mobile!

So we incorporated your feedback into the development plan, making sure our Q.U.I.R.K. Mobile alpha was designed with your thoughts in mind. While we've been able to add a host of new features, we know there is a lot more work to be done. Part of that work involves transitioning Q.U.I.R.K. to a free-to-play model across all of our platforms.

But what does that mean for Steam users who purchased Q.U.I.R.K. through Steam Early Access? What are all the new features? When are we going to push those new features to VR, PC and macOS? Also, how can you get a piece of this Q.U.I.R.K. Mobile action?

So many great questions and we've only just scratched the surface. Have something you'd like us to address? Reply to this Steam thread, and let us know what's on your mind. We're looking forward to talking with you.

Here we go!

Hey, I paid for Q.U.I.R.K. with money! What do I get?

We've cooked up something really special for you, the glorious supporter of indie games, but we have some explaining to do first. Our long-term plan is to support the development of Q.U.I.R.K. through micro-transactions. At some point in the near future, our PC, macOS, and VR gaming communities will be able to buy into vanity and time-saving features using real money, like our current Q.U.I.R.K. Mobile gaming community. When those features are rolled out to our friends on PC and macOS, everyone who purchased Q.U.I.R.K. through steam will get double the amount they spent--a $20.00 USD credit to their game account.

But wait, there's more!

Until now, we've only allowed players in the Philippines using Android devices to join in our Q.U.I.R.K. Mobile tests. However, in addition to receiving twice the value of your Q.U.I.R.K. purchase, everyone who played Q.U.I.R.K. on Steam can now participate in our mobile testing for Android! Don't fret, iPhone users! You'll be in the mix very soon, so stay tuned for updates on Q.U.I.R.K. Mobile availability on iOS mobile devices.

We'll be sharing how you can get involved in our Q.U.I.R.K. Mobile testing efforts in the next week.

When will we see all these new features on VR, PC, and macOS?

We've already begun updating Q.U.I.R.K. on Steam with the new features we've been developing over the last few months. Further updates will include more art assets, improved UI, friends lists, chat, new building blocks, a total redesign of our map building tools, new game modes, and so much more! Be on the lookout for our weekly updates that will keep you up-to-date on the latest Q.U.I.R.K. improvements.

So you will continue updating Q.U.I.R.K. on Steam?

You bet we will! We remain committed to developing Q.U.I.R.K. for all of our gaming communities. In the future, we will look to combine these communities, which will allow us to provide unprecedented cross-platform support, finally connecting all of our Q.U.I.R.K. friends in one super-mega global gaming community!
