About This Game

Pave. Trade. Prosper.

Tradeways is a road-planning strategy game drawn like a living map. Found villages on the land's riches, tie them to town with roads, and keep a hungry, growing population supplied. Every road in use and every guard post costs upkeep, so the best realm is not the biggest one. It is the leanest, safest network you can plan.

Drag a road from a village to town and watch the first trade party set out. Branch, merge and reroute as the map fills in. Pave the busiest stretches, raise bridges where the river runs narrow, ferry across the sea, and when the rivers freeze, lay ice roads that cost nothing until the thaw.

Six goods feed the town: grain, timber, wool, stone, clay and iron. Each new rank, from Market Town to Borough, Shire Town, City, Great City and Royal Capital, brings more mouths and a new need. Villages prosper when they are served well and wither when they are not, and land worked too hard runs out. Survey the fog for hidden deposits before your stores run dry.

The richest land lies far from town: iron seams in the hills, clay pits along the fens, stone quarries out in the waste. Charter a staple town near them, and the villages around it bring their goods there on short roads. Its wagons then haul everything to town down one great trunk road, the king's way. Guard it well, because every bandit in the shire knows what it carries.

At every midwinter the sovereign's collectors come for tribute, and each year it is assessed higher. Miss a payment and you earn a mark of displeasure; three, and you are deposed.

Bandits gather where the trade is richest. Post guards where they will do the most good, upgrade the posts that matter, and send out patrols and militia when a band grows bold.

Lowland vales and twin rivers, northern taiga with long frozen winters, highland passes, desert oases swept by sandstorms, fenland that floods every spring, and coastlines cut by the sea. Floods, plague and royal commissions keep you improvising.

Build granaries, mills and workshops, hire town caravans, train a watch, mint coin, and raise monuments from a market cross to a cathedral and a royal palace. New improvements open up as the town grows.
