About This Game

Your deck is your gun.

The Hands - a pair of giant hands that play chess from the clouds - ate the Jester's cake. Now the Jester wants revenge, and the only weapon at hand is a deck of cards.

Jester's Anger is a fast first-person roguelike where every shot is a card thrown from your 20-card deck. Shatter marble chess pieces chunk by chunk, slide and rocket-jump across the board, and build the deck that will finally bring The Hands down.

Read the top of the deck

  • Single throw - flick the top card. Every card has its own effect, and a card to the head shatters a piece in one hit.
  • Shotgun fan - throw the top five at once. Their effects don't trigger, but the five are read as a poker hand: a pair, a flush or a royal straight flush multiplies the damage.
  • Deck grenade - hurl the rest of your deck in one go. It bursts into a storm of cards.
  • No reload button: throw all 20 cards and the Jester shuffles them back in.

Over 130 cards to throw

  • Jester cards - paint the floor red (more damage), blue (slower enemies) or yellow (faster you). Stick explosive cards that blow off heads and launch you skyward, bounce cards off the walls, or swap places with a piece castling-style, crashing into it halfway.
  • Playing cards - spades pierce, hearts drain life, diamonds explode, clubs stun. The Joker turns an enemy piece to your side.
  • Tarot cards - the 22 Major Arcana are spells. The Tower calls down lightning, The World freezes every piece, Death kills outright.

Break them. Literally.

Every chess piece is pre-fractured marble. Hits knock real chunks off where they land, an explosive card snaps off a head or a base, and what is left of a piece shows how hurt it is.
There is no health regen. The only way to heal is to pick up the shards of what you broke - so keep attacking.

A chess army with weapons

Pawns with spears, knights that leap in with lances, bishops sniping with crossbows, rooks that ram, queens spinning with greatswords, and a king who knows every move. Enemy upgrades bring white marble elites: knighted pawns, pegasus knights, cannon rooks, gatling bishops and more.

Every wave is a deal

Between waves, pick one of two bundles - a player upgrade, an enemy upgrade and a map change, all in one. Take the great card that comes with a nasty enemy, or play it safe. Riskier picks pay out more chips.
The arena changes as you go: hills rise out of the board, lava pits open, ice spreads, updrafts carry you into the air. Every fifth wave brings special upgrades.

Bosses

  • The King - a sledgehammer, and every other piece's moves.
  • The Checkmate Colossus - ten pawns are sacrificed to summon a giant built from chess pieces. Knock its limbs off before its rocket fist finds you.
  • The Hands - the cake thief. The walls fall away, the board floats in the sky, and the hands come down from the clouds to punch, chew and laser you.

Style and collection

  • A style meter ranked like playing cards, from Deuce all the way up to Jester's Anger. Switch weapons, fight in the air, never stand still.
  • Spend your chips on Jester, Trump and Tarot card packs. Tear them open and flip shiny, holo and full-art cards.
  • Build up to five 20-card decks, and paint your own card sleeve pixel by pixel.
  • Chunky pixelated 3D and an all-8-bit chiptune soundtrack.
