About This Game

Outfitter is a fly-fishing and river-running adventure on one real river: the Madison, followed for 228 km from Madison Junction in Yellowstone to the Missouri Headwaters at Three Forks, Montana. Paddle your canoe downstream through 51 reaches, read the water, land wild trout on a fly or a spinner, hunt the ridges above the river, and decide how far off the water you want to wander, alone or with a friend in two-player co-op.

Fly fish a real river

Cast into riffles, runs, pools and tailouts and watch the water. A trout comes up under the fly, looks it over and takes it in a swirl: strike in that moment and hold while the rod loads to set the hook. Then the fight is in the water in front of you: it runs, jumps clear, shakes its head at the top and charges at you, and you answer with the reel and side pressure. Bring it in spent, net it as it slides over, kneel with it in the shallows and let it go. Seven species swim the Madison: rainbow, brown, westslope cutthroat and brook trout, mountain whitefish, longnose sucker and the rare Arctic grayling. Every fish goes back, every release earns credit at Hank's fly shop, and your log keeps a personal best for each species.

Spinners, spoons and strategy

Pick up the ultralight spinning outfit at Hank's and tie on a rooster-tail spinner, a gold inline spinner or a casting spoon. Each lure has its own speed and depth, and the retrieve is in your hands: short, steady turns of the handle keep it working, a stalled lure sinks and snags, a rushed one skips on top. Keep it steady and a fish follows it in and hits; keep cranking through the hit. The spinning rod fishes from a drifting canoe, no anchor needed, so you can work the banks as the current carries you. The field notes (N, or the map) rank which method suits each stretch of the river, by the odds: dries in the evening rise, streamers on grey days, spinners in the fast runs, spoons for the big browns of the lower river.

Read the water, run the rapids

Every paddle stroke is timed. Catch the blade's ready moment for a Perfect stroke and build a rhythm that pulls harder, then sweep and rudder your way through Bear Trap Canyon: Double Drop, Whitehorse and the Green Wave, with a portage round the Kitchen Sink. The current shoves, shears and rolls the hull, rocks dent aluminium and crack Kevlar, and a bad line leaves you swimming after your canoe.

228 km of wild Montana

Float from Yellowstone's meadows past bison and elk, across Hebgen Lake, through the drowned forest of Quake Lake, down the long riffles of the Upper Madison and into the canyon. Fifteen kinds of mammal and seventeen kinds of bird share the valley, from grizzlies and wolf packs to moose, bighorn sheep, river otters, bald eagles and sandhill cranes. The sky follows the valley's live weather and the real time of day, so when dusk comes, switch on your flashlight or the bow searchlight and keep fishing.

Hunt the ridges

Take Hank's quest for a scoped 6.5 Creedmoor and a mule deer tag, then buy tags for elk and pronghorn. Press T to track: prints, droppings and beds show on the ground, and standing on a fresh print tells you what walked there, how many, how long ago and which way, then marks the trail ahead. Crouch to stalk, glass the slopes with the binoculars (every animal in view is labelled with its range and whether your tag allows it), and wait for a clean shot. A good shot puts the animal down where it stood and sends the rest of the valley running. Field dress it with E for the meat, the hide and the antlers, and sell the hides and antlers at Hank's.

Bring a friend

Host a room, share the code or the invite link, and float the same water in two canoes. You see your partner paddle beside you, hear about their catches and their capsizes, and each keep your own gear, money and progress.

Off the river

Pull ashore on any reach and climb. 189 places hide in the hills, reached by switchback trails or an ATV ride from the put-in: search old cabins, mines and sheep wagons for cash, sign the summit registers, and find the ranchers and rangers who will tell you where a trophy fish is lying.

Outfit yourself

Spend your credit on rods, reels, leaders, polarized glasses, flies, spinners and spoons at Hank's, and at Nora's boatworks on faster hulls (Royalex, Kevlar, carbon), better paddles, a spray deck, a bilge pump, a river anchor, a trolling motor and a bow searchlight.
