What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Antmates is fully playable, and every feature described on this page is already in the game. What we still want to get right together with players is the balance — how fast a colony grows, what upgrades cost and how income adds up over long sessions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About two to three months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to spend Early Access on balance and polish — the pace of colony growth, room upgrade costs, crumb income and trail milestones — based on how your colonies actually play out. The full version is planned to be the same game, tuned with your feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Fully playable. Everything described on this page is in the game: rooms and both upgrade paths, the colony roles, crumbs, the shop and trail milestones. While we tune the balance, numbers such as costs and income may change between updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We're not planning on changing the price when we leave Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read the reviews and discussions on our Steam page and plan to tune the balance around what players tell us. We plan to post patch notes so you can see what changed and why.”

About This Game

You plan. They dig.

Antmates puts a living ant colony in a glass formicarium right on your desktop. Your ants dig tunnels, haul crumbs home, fuss over the brood, nap in their dormitory and greet visitors at the glass. You decide where the next room goes and what to level up — they take care of the rest while you work, read or just watch them bustle about.

Every crumb counts

  • See where every crumb comes from: your income is a chain of multipliers — foragers, worker strength, crowding, trails, the jam at the entrance, rooms and diet — and the biggest drag is flagged, so you know what to fix first.
  • Every room levels up two ways, and the game ranks income upgrades by how fast they pay for themselves.
  • The colony grows only as fast as its tightest spot. Hunt it down: beds, crowding, the entrance, the queen’s space.
  • Trail and population milestones multiply your income, and the entrance widens as the colony grows.

Dig. Build. Settle in.

  • Plan your nest with 25 kinds of rooms — from the Royal Chamber and the Nursery to the Pantry, the Well, the Sunroom and even a Cinema.
  • Each room climbs two ladders of 100 levels and furnishes itself as it grows: shelves fill up, beds and lamps move in, finishes go from dug to decorated. Some spots the ants simply like better. One MAX click buys every level you can afford.
  • Diggers carve out real tunnels cell by cell and haul the dirt up to the surface — you could watch them work for hours.

Feed them well

Crumbs come in four kinds — sweet, protein, fatty and salty — and you decide what the feeder drops. Each kind in stock boosts its own job, and all four at once make a feast. Keep the water flask topped up, too: a thirsty colony slows to a crawl. The first refill is free, later ones cost a little.

From egg to wings

  • The queen lays eggs, nurses raise larvae and cocoons, and every worker grows up through 5 ages — from tots to adults.
  • Split the work between foragers, diggers and nurses — or pick a preset and let the colony find its own rhythm.
  • When the colony is ready, winged ants rise on their nuptial flight. Start a new colony and carry your legacy into it, while the old queen rests in amber in the Queens’ Hall beside a plaque of her colony’s deeds.

Look closer

  • Dig up 14 finds hidden in the sand: a coat button, a 1978 penny, a tin soldier, a glass marble…
  • Eight visitors drop by the glass — a ladybug, a snail, a woodlouse, a scarf moth and more. Collect them all in your album.
  • Lean in with the magnifier to watch any room up close, and let the journal tell you what happened while you were away.
  • Curl up with the Antcyclopedia, a book about the real garden ant — from egg to home formicarium, with photos.

Make it yours

Dress up the surface with a Windmill, a Barn, Temple Ruins or a Smoking Volcano. Change the soil, paint marks on your ants, treat them to vitamins — all for Tockens: every second the game runs drops one more into your counter.

Gentle by design

  • Your colony never dies out while you are away — it simply dozes off until you come back.
  • Soft sounds you can turn down, and an unhurried pace.
  • The glass slowly gathers dust: give it a wipe now and then, or let Auto-care do it for you.
  • No ads, no microtransactions.
  • Any window size, fullscreen, or always on top of your work.

A gift from the ants

In your second hour of play, the farm sand turns out to hide a seed: a cactus sprout pops up under the lamp. Move it to your desktop and it settles on the shelf beside the farm, in a pot of its own, with a little plate for its name. Not a cactus person? Weed it out — no hard feelings.
  • Water it every three days; fertilizer is optional and only speeds up growth. Forget it for a while and it won’t die — it just falls asleep until you water it.
  • The ants dig up mutagen vials, three for every cactus. You pick which cactus gets each one, and the vial picks the rest: 26 mutations, from Purple Reign and Frosted Tips to Midas Touch and Get Off My Lawn.
  • Four kinds of cacti and thousands of possible looks — before you even count the pots and colors.
  • The Pot Has Eyes — and they follow your cursor.
  • Your cacti bloom and new sprouts keep coming, so the shelf slowly fills up with little friends.
