About This Software

A few lines. Your own sound.

MusiCo:3 | Code for Music is a Strudel-powered music studio for Windows and Linux with a retro terminal interface. Write a beat, press RUN and hear your ideas take shape. Edit a pattern while it plays, draw a melody in the Piano Roll, or start with a lesson and change one thing at a time.

Coming Soon: The official Steam release is still in preparation. Playtest access and availability are separate from the full release. Back up projects when trying test builds.

Code it. Draw it. Shape it.

  • Live coding: Create rhythms, melodies and layered patterns in the Strudel editor. Use autocomplete, search, undo/redo, project tabs and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Piano Roll: Sketch across seven octaves and up to eight bars. Add, move and resize notes, box-select, adjust snap and zoom, and preview a loop. Generate editable Strudel code or import notes from your last RUN.
  • Sound Math: Start from a recipe, choose a mathematical curve or draw one with your mouse. Shape bass, distortion and envelopes, hear a preview and turn the result into code. Note dots show the sampled curve values; the graph describes a control formula, not measured audio.
  • Learn by experimenting: Follow beginner lessons, browse categorized snippets and preview ideas before adding them to a project. Keep favorites and your own snippet library.

A studio that looks like you

Choose themes, customize colors, fonts and keyboard shortcuts, and arrange the workspace. Add an ASCII companion or switch playback visualizations. Editor-only mode keeps the focus on code, with optional playing-note highlights. CRT and motion controls let you adjust the presentation.

The Plugin Manager brings together the bundled themes, views, companions and music packs. Enable contributions and adjust their settings in one place. Plugin auto-start applies enabled contributions; it never starts music on its own.

Keep the idea. Export the track.

Save projects, reopen experiments and share editable project or library files. Record the app's music output and export WAV or lossless FLAC. Both exports preserve the same stereo PCM16 recording; file sizes vary with the music. Rights to external samples and borrowed material still apply to recordings.

Control master volume and mute, watch output meters and choose an audio output on supported systems. The included synths and piano work offline; external sample sources need internet access when downloading sounds.

Open source, independent, made for experimentation

Application source is available under AGPL-3.0-or-later. Matching source and third-party notices accompany distributions. Developers can add engine adapters when rebuilding from source. MusiCo:3 is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Strudel project.

The interface is in English. A keyboard and mouse are required for the intended workflow; gamepads are not supported. Projects are saved locally. Exported files and copied code provide a straightforward way to share your work.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Generative AI was used to create pre-generated content for MusiCo and its store/marketing materials, including written content, artwork and music-related material. Third-party libraries and samples retain their separately documented credits and licences. MusiCo does not include a built-in live generative AI service.
