You wake in a gravekeeper's cottage with no memory and no skills, and the Obelisk on the hill opens only for a master of all twenty-two. Chop, smith, fight and sing the dead to rest in a foggy single-player Vale, then lie down and rise again, quicker every life.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Mossgrave is a long game with a lot of skills, and we would rather build the later regions with players than guess at them alone. Early Access lets us tune pacing, the Lay to Rest loop and each skill's upgrade tree around how people actually play, while the world grows region by region.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect around a year. Each new region arrives as an update with its skills, creatures, gear and quests.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to have all 22 skills across five regions (the Heartland, the Marsh, the Rain Peaks, the Golden Hills and the Dragon Crag), the opening of the Obelisk, Ascension, challenge modes with leaderboards, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud saves and controller support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Early Access starts in the Heartland: the opening quest and its five teachers, fourteen skills to 99 (Woodcutting, Mining, Fishing, Smithing, Cooking, Artisanry, Woodworking, Melee, Archery, Magic, Defense, Vitality, Gravesong and Pyrecraft), the full Lay to Rest loop with Renown, per-skill talent trees and Mastery Crests, the bank and Lockbox, fourteen gear slots, and a day and night cycle. Expect rough edges and balance changes.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will rise in steps as new regions and skills are added, reaching the full price at release. Everyone who buys during Early Access gets every update and the full version at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam discussion boards, the Biggietronics Discord and the Mossgrave dev log on our website. Feedback from each update shapes the next region's pacing and skills.”

About This Game

Somebody is leaning over your cot. That would be Gravekeeper Mossbeard, and his beard is mostly moss. Up the hill stands the Obelisk, older than the first grave, and it opens only for one who has mastered every skill. He'll put the kettle on.

Chop, mine and fish. Smith five metals into gear, cook what you catch, and craft cloth, leather and jewelry with Artisanry. Carve bows and staves with Woodworking. Fight with sword, bow and spell, sing the dead to rest with Gravesong, and light the fires of Pyrecraft that push back the fog. Click a tree to chop it, or right-click anything for every action, Examine included.

Taking one skill to 99 the slow way is a very long walk. So lie down instead. At the resting stone every skill drops back to 1 and you earn Renown, which never resets. Climb Renown's ranks and every life after learns faster than the last.

Your first rest wakes a talent tree in every skill. Points come from the best levels you've ever reached, so no life is wasted, and each time you lie down you may unlearn the lot for free and try another road. Head start rungs wake you at half a level's XP instead of level 1, and tick-box staples along the bottom add more XP, quicker hands and double drops.

A few talents from the trees:

  • Nest-Shaker (Woodcutting): swings knock rooks' nests loose, full of grave pennies, rough stones and lost rings.
  • Lamplight (Mining): carry a lit lantern and hidden veins show themselves in the dark of the Deep Seam.
  • Big Catch (Fishing): some catches are whoppers. Have the biggest stuffed for the cottage wall.
  • Goose Fodder (Cooking): burnt food goes to Her Honkness for a fletching feather. Sometimes she gives you a look instead.
  • Weapon Schools (Melee): axes cleave a second foe, maces stagger, and swords turn blows aside.
  • Ricochet (Archery): arrows bounce to a second foe, and later pass straight through a line of them.
  • Kindle-Word (Magic): light a fire with a word, no flint, and it starts bigger.
  • Sexton's Bell (Gravesong): ring the chapel bell and the restless stay in their graves a while.

Reach 99 once and its Mastery Crest is yours for good. Its brazier at the Obelisk lights and never goes out.

Renown is spent in the Hall of Renown, and what you buy there is kept through every life.

  • Remembered Ground: double XP in a skill while you're below your best-ever level in it. Rank II makes it triple.
  • Porter's Pact: half of what you gather or loot goes straight to your bank with Barnaby.
  • Nimble Fingers: +5% gathering and making speed, five ranks deep.
  • Tools Remembered: wake with a hatchet, pickaxe and rod, then of the best metal you've ever wielded, then with its armor too.
  • Deep Satchel: one more row of satchel slots, twice over.
  • Gravekeeper's Tithe: +10% Renown from every rest, per rank.
  • Lockbox Hinges and Warded Holes: more room for the treasures that survive every rest.

  • Smith five metals, from humble bog iron up to moonsteel.
  • Metal, leather and cloth each stand up to a different kind of foe.
  • Temper a piece to raise its grade, set a cut gem in it, and wear it in. At the fifth notch it earns a name. Parsnip's Regret is a real one.
  • Fourteen gear slots, two of them rings, and every piece shows on your character.
  • Rare finds and boss lessons fill your four ability keys.

Twelve Tales to tell across the Heartland, from The Unquiet Acre to Toll and Trouble, each with an heirloom to wear. The Book of Deeds holds 287 deeds, from honest milestones to being knocked out by a goose. Earn titles and wear them proudly, or at least wear them.

The lamplighter makes his rounds at dusk, the night watch walks the roads, corpse-candles drift over the Drowned Graveyard, and a tinker and his donkey turn up when they please. Shops keep honest hours. Everything happens while you play, with no timers ticking while you're away.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Mossgrave was built with an AI coding assistant, directed and reviewed by the developer. The AI wrote the game's code, including the procedural code that generates the 3D models, textures, pixel-art interface, music and sound effects. It also drafted the in-game text (dialogue, quest and item descriptions) and the text on this store page. Store images are captured from the game itself. No AI image or music generation models were used. The trailer's narration is an AI-generated voice; the game itself has no voice acting, and nothing is generated by AI while you play.
