About This Game

One word, one number, 25 files

Codeguess is a word game for 2 to 24 players. Two teams face off, Red against Teal. Only the two spymasters know which files belong to which team. Each turn they give their agents a single clue: one word and a number. "Ocean 3" means three files are linked to ocean.

The agents talk it over, mark files and reveal them. Hit one of yours and you keep guessing. A civilian ends your turn, a rival file helps the other team. Reveal the bomb and you lose on the spot.

Gadget cards: help, sabotage, chaos

Each team holds a hidden hand of gadget cards and draws a new one every turn. There are 22 cards in three rarities: common, rare and epic. The Compass lights up the row with the most of your files, X-Ray reveals a civilian. Against the other team you can drop a smoke screen, flip every file into mirror writing or jam the radio so their agents never hear the number. Sabotage stays secret until it strikes.

Hits earn credits, misses cost them, and credits buy extra cards. The team that's behind draws rare cards more often. Five presets range from "Classic" with no gadgets to "Chaos" with every card, or you build your own set.

An AI spymaster from two players up

Not enough people for two spymasters? Let the AI take over for one team or both, so a single agent per team is enough. Pick one of three levels: the Recruit gives simple clues, the Agent plays like a solid teammate, and the Master Spy links up to four files and plays its gadget cards with purpose.

Voice chat that knows the rules

No Discord needed. Voice chat is built in and decides who hears whom: agents hear each other, including the rival team. Spymasters hear every agent but only talk to each other, so nobody can leak what's on their key card.

More show, more tactics

  • Combos up to ×3 for hits in a row and jackpot files with bonus points
  • Radio call: the spymaster records a five-second extra hint, distorted as robot, helium or deep voice
  • Objections with a vote when a clue breaks the rules
  • A debrief after every mission with all clues, the files each spymaster meant and every radio call to replay

Made for streaming

Streamer mode hides your invite code, and the room code alone won't let anyone in. A privacy screen only shows the spymaster's colors while a key is held. Your Twitch chat can play along too: "!tip word" suggests clues when you're the spymaster, "!card 7" marks files when you're an agent.

What the Steam version adds

Codeguess is also free to play in the browser, with two word packs and four basic gadgets. The Steam version unlocks everything:
  • All nine word packs in English and German, over 1,800 words per language, plus your own words
  • Community word packs from the Steam Workshop, and you can publish your own right from the game
  • All 22 gadget cards and every preset
  • Six file designs: Manila, Classified, Blueprint, Noir, Terminal and Gala
  • Steam achievements, invites through your friends list and Rich Presence
Your friends don't need the Steam version. They join through an invite link in their browser and play for free. When you host on Steam, your word packs and Workshop packs apply to the whole room.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some sound effects were generated with an AI tool (ElevenLabs) and then edited by hand. Parts of the code, text and artwork were created with AI assistance and reviewed and revised. Live-generated: the optional AI spymaster comes up with its clues during play using a language model. It only outputs a single word and a number. The server checks every word against the game rules and discards anything else. Players cannot send it any text of their own.
