What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The core systems (survival, building, vehicles, co-op, events) are in and working, but the game has only been tested by its developers. Balance numbers are first guesses, co-op and voice have had little real-world testing, and the 3.3 km map expansion is still being filled in. Player feedback on difficulty, loot and co-op will decide what gets tuned.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 6–8 months. We’ll keep pushing weekly updates with new content, balance changes, and bug fixes while we finish the remaining planned features. We’ll move toward full release once those are in and the community feels the game is ready.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“More vehicles, mounted weapons and base defences; finish placing Calder, the airport and the Military Base; more zombie, animal and event variety; a full balance pass using real player data; audio and music polish; Steam Deck verification; more achievements; localisation if there is demand.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“A playable survival game: single-player or co-op for up to 8, the 3.3 km map, ~50 guns, mounted machine guns, civilian and military vehicles (incl. a tank), building, farming, hunting, pets, events, full controller support and 26 achievements. Rough edges: unbalanced difficulty, unfinished parts of the new map, lightly tested co-op, English only.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Price will not change when we leave early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Steam discussions and update posts, a public roadmap in announcements, regular patches driven by bug reports, and a pinned feedback thread for balance and co-op.”

About This Game

LAST THAW is a low-poly, hardcore survival game about getting through one more night. The dead walk the roads of a quiet northern region, the season is turning, and everything you need (food, warmth, a roof, a way out) has to be found, built or taken.

There is no health bar. You learn how you are doing the way a person would: by how you feel, how you move, and what the screen does when you are freezing, starving or bleeding.

  • Hunger, thirst, stamina, body temperature and wetness. Soaked clothes in a blizzard kill as surely as a bite.
  • Fever, food poisoning, bleeding, infection and broken bones you splint to keep walking.
  • Visible, layered clothing that tears, gets wet and can be sewn. You start in your underwear.
  • Cook, boil water, bandage, find medicine. Desperate? Strange meat will keep you alive, and make you sick.

  • Houses, shops, a clinic, a police station, a motel, a factory and military sites, with restocking containers.
  • Melee weapons with durability and blocking, a bow with real arrows, and a large arsenal of pistols, revolvers, shotguns, rifles and SMGs with attachments. Heavy weapons (RPG launcher, mortar) are rare finds.
  • Noise matters: the dead hear gunshots, engines and generators, and screamers call the rest.
  • Skin a zombie and wear its hide: the dead ignore you until you run or strike.
  • Man the mounted machine guns in the sandbag nests at the Military Base and Fort Aldren, or build your own at your base.
  • Zoned loot events with a boss, an area to clear and a crate scaled to how much you did.

  • Snap-together building in wood and scrap metal: foundations, walls, doors, windows, floors, stairs, ladders, roofs, extra storeys.
  • Padlocks and keys, barricades for existing houses, generators and lamps, planters, furniture.
  • House plots: deed items for placeable cabins, bungalows and houses.
  • The dead batter doors and walls and find their way inside.

  • Deer and hares, wolf packs at night, bears in the hills. Fish lakes, rivers and the sea. Plant crops before the frost.
  • Tame a stray dog (or an escaped serval) by feeding it; it fights beside you.

  • Cars, vans, trucks and a dirt bike with fuel, batteries, tyres, burnouts and real crash damage: panels crumple, doors and wheels come off, and you strip, repair and upgrade parts.
  • Military vehicles at the Military Base: a field car, a 6x6 cargo truck, an articulated troop carrier with a ramp you lower from the cab, and a tank.
  • Swim lakes and the sound. Helicopters, boats and a plane.

  • A 3.3 km map: Kellford, Mirror Lake, Saltmarsh and its lighthouse, Brackwater and the dam, the Greywall range, the quarry and railway, plus the new land with the city of Calder, an airport and a Military Base. Parts of the new land will keep filling in during Early Access.
  • Four seasons, snow, a freezing lake, a day and night cycle and several weather types.
  • Nights are the dangerous part. Hordes roam, and raiders hold camps.

  • Full controller support: button prompts that switch to your controller, an on-screen keyboard and a controller layout screen. Or mouse and keyboard with rebindable keys.
  • Difficulty from Peaceful (no zombies) up, UI scale, subtitles, field of view, camera shake on or off.

  • Online co-op for up to 8 players via Steam invites or IP, optional PvP, shared bases and keys, group sleep, proximity voice and walkie-talkies.
  • Host-run world; friends see exactly what you wear.

Planned for Early Access updates. The order may change as we test.
  • Survival and tactics: bigger, slower hordes; sneaking that really keeps you hidden; sound grenades that pull the dead away (the military dead ignore them); energy bars and drinks; loot that refills every four in-game days; looting that highlights what you look at and never reaches through walls.
  • Deeper gear: clothing with its own pockets, a sewing kit to stitch two backpacks into a bigger one, and military armour.
  • Buddies and pets: recruit survivors who follow you or guard your base, and dress and arm them yourself. Lures and bait for taming wild animals.
  • Farming through the seasons: crops that grow in stages, and only in the right seasons.
  • Character creation: your name and look, a thin or heavy build, and five professions with their own starting kits.
  • Bigger multiplayer: dedicated servers and a server list.
  • Performance: longer view distances for trees and buildings, faster loading, and an on-screen FPS counter.
  • Sound: gusting wind, birdsong in the countryside, and howling blizzards.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Last Thaw is designed and directed by TAH Games. AI coding tools helped with parts of the programming, including the scripts that build the low-poly 3D models. Nothing is generated by AI while you play.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Last Thaw contains violence against zombies and armed human enemies (melee weapons, firearms, explosives and fire), with blood effects, dismemberment and zombies feeding on bodies. Players can butcher animals for food and, as a desperate survival option, human bodies; eating that meat makes the character sick. Optional PvP lets players attack each other. The visuals are low-poly and non-photographic.
