What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Matecalipsis already has a playable foundation, but finding the right balance for a deckbuilding roguelike takes more than testing it on our own. We want to develop it alongside players, using feedback on characters, cards, amulets and encounters to improve each run. Early Access will also let us explore weather-based card and amulet interactions and expand the adventure with more enemies, events and news broadcasts, while refining the interface and overall experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently estimate around six months in Early Access. This is a rough timeframe, not a fixed release date: it may change depending on balancing, testing and player feedback. We will keep the community informed as development progresses.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our goal is a more polished and varied experience, with a stronger overall balance and more ways to build different decks. We plan to expand the pool of cards and amulets, explore effects that respond to weather conditions, and add more enemies, events and news broadcasts. We also aim to keep improving the interface, accessibility and technical stability. These are development goals rather than guarantees of specific features; priorities may change as we test ideas and gather feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version includes turn-based card combat, characters with distinct decks and resources, journeys across Argentina, enemies and bosses inspired by local folklore, regional events, shops and persistent unlocks. You can collect amulets, fill the discovery Album and see real-world weather reflected in combat scenery. The weather currently affects visuals, not combat rules. The overall balance and content are still being refined, so bugs, uneven encounters and combinations that need adjusting may appear.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not currently plan to increase the price when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to gather feedback through Steam discussions and our feedback form. Reports about difficulty, cards, amulets, enemies, artwork, interface issues and bugs will help us identify problems and decide which improvements to prioritize. Ideas for encounters and new content are welcome too. We intend to share development updates and explain relevant changes so players can follow how the game evolves.”

About This Game

Argentina has run out of yerba. Nobody knows why.

Matecalipsis: The Last Mate is a turn-based deckbuilding roguelike set in an Argentina that's out of yerba mate, but has no shortage of trouble.

Choose your character, combine cards and amulets, and travel across the country through local legends, unexpected encounters, and choices that can save your run… or make it a whole lot harder.

Your deck. Your way to travel.

The Diner Owner, the Footballer, and the Doctor each have their own cards, resources, and approach to combat. Other characters are waiting to be discovered.

Manage your energy, anticipate enemy intentions, and combine attacks, skills, and powers. Pick your rewards and collect amulets to build a strategy that works… until the next encounter makes you improvise.

An Argentina to explore

Travel through all 23 provinces and the City of Buenos Aires, across five regions: Pampeana, Cuyo, the Northwest, the Northeast, and Patagonia.

Discover landscapes, local events, and more than 200 real-world facts with their sources. From Gualeguaychú's Carnival to the roads of Patagonia, every stop has something of its own. And it isn't always good news for your character.

Legends that won't stay in the storybooks

Face creatures from Argentine folklore, including the Lobizón, the Pombero, the Luz Mala, the Salamanca, and the Nahuelito. Each encounter calls for a different approach: a strong deck helps, but knowing when to play each card can make all the difference.

There's always one more stop

Buy cards and amulets from the Street Vendor, refresh his stock, and remove cards you no longer need. Trade with the Street Exchanger, rest, and decide how to spend your resources before moving on.

Between runs, spend your Tokens at the Roadside Kiosk to unlock cards for future journeys. Fill your Album with the cards, amulets, and enemies you discover, and unlock characters and story scenes as you progress.

Real-world weather in your run

The game checks each province's real-world weather and brings it into the scenery. If it's raining in Córdoba, rain falls during combat. If there's fog in Tierra del Fuego, it rolls across the landscape. And if there's a thunderstorm in Santa Fe, you'll see lightning too.

Sunshine, clouds, rain, fog, and thunderstorms give each journey a different atmosphere, with the temperature shown on screen. Weather affects the visuals without changing the combat rules. You can turn its effects off in Options.

Made in Argentina

Argentine humor, milanesas, thermoses, and creatures of the wilderness, brought together in a pixel-art adventure where everyday life meets the absurd.

Pour one more mate. There's still water in the thermos.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Generative AI tools were used during development to create pre-generated artwork, music and sound effects, and to assist with written content and localization. The game does not generate AI content during gameplay.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Contains stylized turn-based combat against humans and creatures from Argentine folklore, mildly frightening fantasy imagery, comic references to crime and social issues, and references to alcohol and tobacco. Some cards and amulets depict alcoholic beverages. Regional carnival artwork includes revealing costumes. There is no explicit sexual content.
