A goofy co-op game where you and 1 to 4 friends play Gladiators in a wild Roman coliseum. You must survive the dangers, the crowd, and the backstabbing of your "friends". Everyone is an enemy, and everything is a weapon.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're Gonna Die is a co-op physics comedy, and the only way to tune comedy is to watch real groups of friends play it. Early Access lets us see which beasts, props and disasters make your group scream with laughter (and which just make you scream), and build the rest of the game around that.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect roughly 6–12 months, depending on what we learn from players.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to:
- add more beasts and arena threats, more Emperors with their own quirks, and more arena variants and events
- expand the herald's commentary, so there's more for him to say about how badly things are going
- add more handicaps, cosmetics and long-term unlocks
- add more ways to play, and polish the online experience, controller support and accessibility

Which of these come first will depend heavily on community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable solo (with bots) or with up to 4 players in online co-op. A run is a series of bouts in the arena: you face what comes through the gate, beasts ranging from chickens to hippos (and your mothers), and survive the Emperor's thumb. Every gladiator gets a randomized body that changes how they play, down to whether you can understand the herald. Expect rough edges, balance changes and bugs as we keep building.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price gradually as major content and features are added, so Early Access players get the game at its lowest price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Our Discord is open to everyone. We read bug reports and suggestions there and in the Steam forums, post regular development updates, and put new content into playtest builds for the community before it ships. Your clips of things going hilariously wrong directly shape what we build next.”

About This Game

THE EMPEROR IS BORED

You and up to three friends walk into the Colosseum holding whatever was left in the armory. Today that's a fish, a lettuce and a marble bust of the Emperor. Please do not throw the bust at the Emperor.

THE GATE OPENS

Forty thousand Romans vote on what comes through it. It could be a lion. It could be forty chickens. It could be your mothers. There are 41 things behind that gate and a few of them are birds.

THE CROWD HAS REQUESTS

Halfway through a fight the stands will ask for a hug. Or a conga line. Or for somebody to throw a man into the seats. Give them what they want and the Emperor stands up and cheers. Ignore them and you get the other thumb.

DYING IS A PROMOTION

The first of you to die takes the Emperor's seat and judges the rest. Die later and you're a Senator with opinions, or a Shade who throws rocks, greases the sand and climbs inside the ostrich that's chasing your friend.

NOBODY IS BUILT THE SAME

Every gladiator rolls a random body, and the body is the stats. The tall one sees over the wall and falls over in a light breeze. The short, wide one is nearly impossible to shove and can't jump. Pea brains hear the herald as gibberish.

FEATURES

  • Online co-op for 1 to 4 players, with bots if your friends are late
  • Proximity voice chat, so you can hear your friend scream as they get dragged away
  • 80 weapons, most of them not weapons: fish, eel, cheese wheel, your mother's sandal, a live chicken
  • 41 things that come through the gate, from geese to a hippo to A Bigger Goose
  • 31 crowd demands, 10 handicaps (bucket on your head, blindfold, lettuce only) and 6 Emperors with different tastes
  • Full controller support. Windows and macOS

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

I've wanted to make games for as long as I can remember but could never learn to code, so AI helped write the code. Some 3D models started as AI-generated base meshes that were then reshaped and repainted by hand, and the arena announcer is an AI voice reading lines we wrote. Everything else is hand-made or licensed.
