About This Game

NIGHTWARD is a short first-person horror game set in a regional hospital that was emptied in a single night.

Your mother died last month. In her bag you found a visitor's card: EAST WARD – BED 4. On the back, in her handwriting: “He didn't recognise me.”

Twelve years after the evacuation, you walk back in with a torch, a few batteries and the rest of the night.


Something tall walks the wards now. Hold it in your torch and it stands perfectly still. Look away, blink, turn a corner – and it is closer.


Blink – It freezes while you watch it and moves every time you blink. Use a key, or let your webcam catch your real blinks.

• Sound – Running, doors, drawers, a slammed stairwell door. Switch on your microphone and it hears you too: a whisper, a word, a scream.

• Hard – Both at once. Get caught and the night starts again.

The webcam and microphone are optional and only switch on if you choose them. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

Four floors to search: admissions, the east ward, the roof and the cold room in the basement.

• 30 reports, letters, tapes and drawings that piece together what happened on the east ward in February.

• More than a hundred drawers and cabinets – what is inside changes every night.

• Door codes, a generator to restart, and a locked file that was never meant to leave the building.

• Light sticks to throw, safe lights that never last, and a torch that falters when it is near.
