What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Because the combat is finished and the dungeon isn't.

I can tell you exactly how a fight plays, because I've measured it — how often the biggest word is the right one, how much a shared table actually takes out of the enemy's swing, what a chain is worth to a player who plans three turns ahead. What I can't tell you is how it feels on run forty, when you've seen every relic and you're hunting the last cards in the Tome. That's not something I can measure on my own. It needs people playing it more than I can.

The other reason is the dictionary. A hundred and five thousand words is a lot of rope, and players will find combinations I haven't. I'd rather find out now than after launch.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Six months to a year, and I'd rather say that honestly than say six months and take eighteen.

It leaves when the back half of the run is as considered as the front half, and when I've stopped finding things in the feedback that change my mind about the design. If that takes longer, it takes longer — the game will keep getting updates either way.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Better graphics, art style and UX/UI, more relics and items, more enemies and boss fights.
Complete story and lore

Beyond that:
- Online PvP and maybe Co-Op
- More of the Tome, and more reasons to want particular letters
- A harder difficulty
- Blessings and Curses”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Playable start to finish, and stable. It is not a demo or a vertical slice.

You get the full combat system — the shared table, the declared blows, the chain, the elements and their afflictions, the galdr words, the guard, the relics and the Tome. Six characters. Three difficulties. Hotseat PvP local multiplayer. Branching maps and dungeons that keeps going as long as you do. I've also added, and currently testing Controller and Steam Deck Support.

What's thin is the far end. Later acts reuse more than I'd like, and the hardest difficulty isn't offered yet because I haven't balanced it and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will slightly go up at full release depending on how much content I was able to add.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“By reading everything and arguing with some of it.

I will keep on the look out on the Steam forums. I will also add a bug reporting and suggestion/complaint submissions in-game.

Word games have a particular kind of player who will find the degenerate strategy on day one (I'm one of them). If that's you, please break it in public. I'll fix it and say so in the patch notes.”

About This Game

Galðr (Old Norse) — A SPELL THAT ONLY WORKS IF YOU SAY IT LOUD.

The word comes from gala: to crow, to sing, to chant. The same Germanic root still sits inside nightingale, the night-singer. In the sagas a galdr isn't a gesture, or a potion, or a rune scratched in the dirt. It's something you speak, and the speaking is the whole of the magic. No wand. No components. The word did the work.

That's the game. Nine letters on the table. Spell something. The word is not what triggers the weapon — the word is the weapon.

THE TABLE BELONGS TO BOTH OF YOU

Those nine tiles aren't your hand. They're the board, and the creature opposite is reading them too. It tells you what it means to spell and which letters it needs — so every turn you're choosing between the word you want and the word it can't afford to lose. Take its letters and watch the number over its head come down. It will find something else. It will find something worse.

LONG WORDS HIT HARDEST. REPEATED WORDS DON'T HIT AT ALL.

Three letters is a scratch. Nine is three and a half times the damage and a name the fight remembers. But the table only gives back four tiles a turn, so emptying it is a two-turn promise you're making to yourself. And a word your enemy has already heard lands at half weight — say STONE twice and the second one bounces. The dictionary is a resource. You are spending it.

USE SPECIAL LETTER CARDS

Inflict BURN, CHILL, FREEZE or POISON when you form words with special letter cards. Froze the enemy and cast lightning for extra damage. Poison them then burn and the enemy is on for a mighty pain. Mix and match your attacks, use your wits to win and survive. Keep a look out since your enemies can use them too!

EARN RARE LETTER CARDS

You will die ... a lot. Each death will make you stronger by earning random letter cards with special rarities and effects. Add them to your loadout for the next run and you might succeed this time around.

SOME WORDS ARE GALDR

In this game, words are magic, and some magic are more powerful than others. EMBER sets things alight. Something else will freeze a thing where it stands. Discover them all and complete The Tome of Galdrs.

EVERY CREATURE IS A DIFFERENT SENTENCE TO FINISH

Fight monsters, defeat bosses and progress through the dungeons. Some monsters will be more challenging than the rest. Imagine a monster that will eat VOWELS, some will steal your hard-earned cards, some will leech your health with each attack. Defeat them quick and show no mercy.

SIX CHARACTERS ... AND MORE ARE COMING!

Unlock new characters with special abilities that will offer new varieties and challenges.

LOCAL MULTIPLAYER

Challenge another player in a hotseat PvP duel via local multiplayer.

Online PvP is coming soon.
