Fancy a game of chess? See you next Saturday. A chess roguelike about a park bench, a club that fields more than you every week, and pieces chess never had. The board grows, fogs over, and comes apart. What you earn, you earn by playing.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Saturday is a single-player chess roguelike: you play a kid who only gets to the park chess club on Saturdays, and every Saturday somebody new sits down across the board fielding more than you. The full loop is built and beatable end to end, but the game is designed to be hard in both directions — some runs and item combinations are meant to feel great, others are meant to get rebalanced. We want real players finding those combinations and telling us which ones are memorable and which ones are just broken, before we lock the design in for 1.0.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 6 to 12 months. The content list above is finite and small, so the timeline depends mostly on how much balancing player feedback demands.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned for the full 1.0 release and not yet in the current build:

- The seven remaining Unique Bosses. They are designed and written, not yet implemented.
- Eight board variants for the common bosses, so the same opponent does not always play the same table.
- Native Steam Input, with controller remapping and Steam button glyphs. Today the game reads standard gamepads but cannot follow Steam's remapping.
- A tested Linux and Steam Deck build.
- Balance and difficulty passes driven by player feedback, plus a faster, smarter AI.
- Remaining narrative text, mostly the mother and son dialogue.

Not part of 1.0: the online Battle Royale. The game is fully offline today; online play is planned as a later update with its own server.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current build is complete and fully playable start to finish: three difficulty chains (Park Mode, the usual Saturday, and Hell Mode), a run of fourteen Antes ending in an eleven-army finale on a 20x20 board, seventeen non-classic pieces, relics, enchantments and consumables, a shop and formation editor between matches, a shrinking corrupted zone, fog of war in Hell Mode, a club of twenty-nine members with twelve boss rules, six years of real weekly headlines, generated music, gamepad support, and six languages.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We plan to increase the price when the game leaves Early Access, to reflect the content and features added during development. Buying now, during Early Access, is the best way to get Saturday at its lowest price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam Community Hub as our main channel for bug reports and balance discussion, small playtest groups, and dated dev updates on the store page every time a boss, board variant or balance change ships. Feedback that changes the design gets written into our public design log, so players can see what was decided and why. There's no telemetry in the game, and none is planned — everything we learn comes from what you tell us.”

About This Game

Fancy a game of chess? See you next Saturday.

Saturday starts as chess the way you already know it: you sit down on a park bench, learn how the pieces move, win a game or two. But the club has more rooms than it looks like from outside, and every Saturday you come back there's somebody new waiting across the board — fielding more than you.

You start winning pieces chess never had before, and the board itself stops staying still — it grows, fills with fog, breaks apart in places that simply aren't there anymore. There's a shop between matches, there are relics, and there's a dog nobody has ever seen the owner of.

Three ways to spend a Saturday

  • Park Mode — where the club's children play, and nobody is trying to finish you. Start here.
  • The usual Saturday — the adults, and a clock.
  • Hell Mode — unlocked last. The people across the table are the ones the club still talks about.

What you earn, you earn by playing. Same as always, one Saturday after another.

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:
