What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Retro Empire is a game about building your own retro gaming business, starting with a small video game store and working your way towards a gaming empire.

Early Access allows us to develop the game alongside the community, gather valuable feedback, and improve the gameplay experience based on how players interact with its different systems.

We want to make Retro Empire a detailed and enjoyable business simulation where buying, selling, collecting, and managing retro gaming products feels rewarding. Player feedback will help us refine existing mechanics, improve balancing, and shape future content.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently estimate that Retro Empire will remain in Early Access for approximately 12 to 18 months. However, this timeline may change depending on development progress and community feedback. Our priority is to deliver a polished and enjoyable experience rather than rush the full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“During Early Access, we plan to expand Retro Empire with additional gameplay systems, business opportunities, and management features.

Our long-term vision includes:

• Expanding beyond the initial video game store into additional businesses, such as PC stores, internet cafés, and arcades.
• More retro gaming products, consoles, accessories, and collectibles.
• Additional locations to purchase, customize, and manage.
• Expanded employee management and automation systems.
• More detailed buying, selling, inspection, and repair mechanics.
• Improvements to customer behavior, store reputation, business progression, and the in-game economy.
• Additional customization options, furniture, decorations, and arcade machines.

We also plan to continue improving performance, accessibility, controller support, and the overall gameplay experience.

These are our current development goals, and the final scope of the game may evolve based on community feedback and development priorities.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Retro Empire focuses on running and expanding your own retro video game store.

Players can purchase video games and consoles, manage inventory, organize shelves, set product prices, and serve customers while growing their business.

The game also includes systems for purchasing second-hand products, inspecting their condition, repairing certain items, hiring employees, managing store reputation, and unlocking new features as the business progresses.

Players can customize their store with furniture and decorations, manage daily operations, and reinvest their earnings to improve their business.

As an Early Access title, some gameplay systems are still being developed and refined. Players may encounter bugs, balancing issues, or features that are not yet fully implemented. We plan to continue improving the experience and expanding the available content throughout development.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to offer Retro Empire at a lower price during Early Access. As we expand the game with additional content, features, and improvements, we may gradually increase the price. We will communicate any planned price changes to the community in advance.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will play a key role in the development of Retro Empire. We plan to share regular updates and hold polls both on Steam and within the game to understand players' preferences, improve gameplay mechanics, and help shape future content.”

About This Game

Buy a filthy console from a stranger, bring it back to life on your bench and sell it for what it's really worth.

Retro Empire is a first-person shop sim set in a second-hand video game store. You start with three grimy handhelds, two boxes of games and an empty shelf. One of the handhelds won't even turn on.

The free demo takes about an hour, over five in-game days. When day 5 ends, you can keep playing in the same shop.

Scrub off the grime, unscrew the shell, swap the broken part and see if it boots. Customers bring you their broken consoles too.

Find a listing on RetroPop, haggle over the counteroffer and meet the seller in the street. Some sellers forget to mention what's wrong.

Set your own prices, rent out games and consoles, paint the walls and design the sign over the door. Every day you open earns experience, and new levels unlock furniture, services and staff who keep the shop running while you hunt for deals.

Fix the boards, empty the coin box and play the games yourself. Later, turn the old video club down the street into a whole arcade hall.

  • A cyber café
  • Moving the shop to bigger premises
  • More ways to automate the business as it grows

I work on the game every day, so expect things to change between versions.

  • Full controller support
  • Interface in 11 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Turkish and Czech
  • Windows and Linux / SteamOS
