What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Two big reasons. One, Caves of Qud is an extremely complicated game with many interlocking systems & features and lots of unpredictable, emergent gameplay. Diaspora will add a whole new layer to that. Just like with the base game, our approach to building something this complex is to have the community stress test it the whole way.

Two, Caves of Qud development is slow. It takes a long time and a lot of love to hit the quality bar we set for ourselves. We don't want to be beholden to a timeline that forces us to compromise the expansion's vision. And so, by working in Early Access, we're able to fund Diaspora's development as it happens, watering the flower as it blooms.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We don't know for sure, because getting it right will always be more important to us than hitting a time deadline, and some ideas need to slow bake. Roughly, though — on the order of one year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will expand the Early Access features and add several new feature arcs. On the expansion side, this means: more playable plants & animals, more mutations and cybernetic implants, more creatures, more skills, more items & equipment, and more elaborations on dromad caravans.

On the new side: a big questline involving the population influxes of the diaspora, new humanoid species & factions, underground villages, new dynamic quests, mega-dungeon/arcological spaces, roaming mega-caravans, new biomes, new fungal infections, new diseases, new music, and more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Many of the core features are already in:
- Playable animals & plants. 9 animal stocks and 3 plant stocks.
- New progression systems for animals & plants.
- New animal & plant mutations.
- New true kin arcology and castes.
- Two new humanoid callings.
- New weapon type: spears.
- Many new items, including items for animal body parts like tails.
- Many new creatures.
- Dromad caravans and mountable saltbacks.
- Better road and river networks.
- Many UI and performance improvements.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We have not decided on the final launch price. It's likely to stay the same or increase a little bit.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“If you followed our Early Access journey for the base game, you know we like to put out frequent updates as we build out our feature arcs. Sometimes this took the form of Feature Fridays, where we patched new content in every week. Sometimes the cadence was slower, maybe once a month, if we were heads down on finishing a larger feature arc. We expect Diaspora's development to follow this pattern. The expansion will be changing and growing a lot over the course of development life. Expect some instability, but also a lot of vitality.

Just like with the base game, we have a strong vision we are building toward. But Qud is too complicated for us to map out in its entirely on paper, and so we'll be watching and adapting as the community gets into the new features. We hope you'll join us!”

About This Content

The world currents are in flux. Glacial flooding ousts the peoples of the north combs, and in the warming clime, a thousand new pollens lead the kingdom of mousy fauna into the common weald. Across the Pale Sea, the tuyuldars of Odrum lay siege to the colossal freehold of Nanru, and their war wake sends migrants scattering across the Great Salt Desert, into the caravans of the dromads, and from there – to strange and blinding new lands. With this diaspora, the culture-rich fluid of life spills into the far-flung caves of Qud.

What is Diaspora?

Diaspora is the first expansion to Caves of Qud. It includes several new features arcs centered around the influx of riotous life and culture into the region. Over the course of its Early Access development, we'll be adding several more features as well.

PLAYABLE PLANTS & ANIMALS

Along with the Mutated Human and True Kin genotypes, you can now play as a Mutated Animal or Mutated Plant. Choose from one of several animal and plant stocks and customize your character as before. Play as a dog, cat, frog, chameleon, vine, tree, etc...

NEW TRUE KIN ARCOLOGY

Play as one of the denizens of the Great Rondures on the Ocean of Iber — Propeller, Starsteer, Man of Kelp, or Delphine.

NEW MUTATIONS

Choose from a host of new animal and plant mutations to outfit your character. Create an even more protean Mutated Human than before, or upgrade your animal's Species Traits with new animal mutations. Claws, Muzzle, Tail, etc. Take your animal's Tail and mutate it into a Prehensile Tail!

NEW WEAPON SKILL TREE: SPEARS

Wield many kinds of spears and attack your enemies from two tiles away!

NEW CREATURES & ITEMS

From across Moghra'yi, a host of new creatures have migrated to the surface and subterranean habitats of Qud. And along with them, hauled inside the dromad freight chests, artifacts of disparate cultures begin to speckle the great layer cake anew.

DROMAD CARAVANS & MOUNTABLE SALTBACKS

Dromad trade caravans have received a big makeover. Mount the saltback and treat with the dromads on their motile shell-bazaars.

BETTER ROADS & RIVERS

Road and river networks use a much more sophisticated set of worldbuilding algorithms to snake their way through Qud. Follow a road and there's a good chance you'll arrive at an interesting location.

MUCH MORE TO COME!

Over the course of Diaspora's Early Access development we'll be adding many, many more features, including:

  • A new, multi-step questline dealing with the infusion of migrants into Qud and an idiosyncratic dromad named Je'ome the Bounty

  • More animal and plant stocks to choose from at character creation

  • Foxen and Snailfolk — two new humanoid factions from across the Great Salt Desert

  • Roaming mega-caravans

  • Underground villages

  • Large, multi-zone dungeons/arcological spaces

  • New dynamic quests

  • Many new creatures, items, item mods, biomes, ingredients, diseases, and fungal infections

  • New music

  • More features, yet to be revealed...
