What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Pactbound is built by a solo developer and the scope of the full game — additional regions, creatures, and systems — benefits from real player feedback early. Early Access lets players experience the core gameplay loop now while helping shape what comes next. The pact and bargain system, combat, and moral choice mechanics are complete and playable; Early Access is about expanding the world around them.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to be in Early Access for approximately 6 to 12 months, depending on the scope of community feedback and content additions. This timeline may shift as development priorities evolve.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add new explorable regions beyond the current two, expand the creature roster and quest lines, introduce a full combat difficulty system with improved AI scaling, and refine existing systems based on player feedback. We also plan to add additional companion content, quality-of-life improvements, and broader accessibility options.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game includes two fully playable regions (Ember-Shrine and Twin-Vow) with 15 quests, over 125 creatures across six rarity tiers, a complete turn-based combat system with party formation, the full pact and bargain negotiation system, companion recruitment, a Grace and Malice moral choice system, and a world clock that changes NPC availability by time of day. The core gameplay loop is complete from character creation through end-of-region content.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to evaluate pricing as new content and features are added. The price may increase as the game grows in scope, but we have not committed to a specific pricing change at this time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use Steam Community discussions and player feedback to prioritize new content, balance existing systems, and identify issues. Bug reports, feature requests, and gameplay feedback from Early Access players will directly influence development priorities. We want players who enjoy the core experience to help shape what Pactbound becomes.”

About This Game

Pactbound is a dark fantasy RPG about bargaining, not catching. Every creature you meet can be talked with, and if it agrees to deal, the terms are real: you name what you're offering, it names what it wants back, and the bargain resolves the same way every time given the same numbers. No dice hidden behind the curtain.

Every pact costs something permanent. Memory. Years off your life. A bond with someone you care about. A point off one of your own stats. Health that doesn't come back with rest. A favor that gets called in later, on someone else's schedule. What you spend, you keep spent. The game will not let you take it back.

Your choices are tracked two ways: five hidden axes that shape who creatures think you are underneath everything, and a visible Grace and Malice meter that shows the world's running account of what you've actually done. Neither is a morality score with a good or bad label on it.

Bond with a creature and you can wear its strength quietly or call it up to full power mid-fight. Recruit companions, each with their own arc and their own reasons for being stuck where you find them.

Pactbound is a solo dev project, built with AI-assisted tools alongside every human decision on design and prose. It is currently in beta: two regions are playable today, with more of the world still being built.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Most visual assets — character portraits, creature illustrations, region maps and location art — were generated with Black Forest Labs' Flux Dev via Replicate under the developer's direction, then curated, reviewed and in some cases hand-edited by the developer before inclusion. All writing, dialogue, worldbuilding, game systems and code are human-authored. No copyrighted characters or real people are reproduced.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Pactbound is an adult dark-fantasy game for players 18 and over. It
contains:

Sacrifice, grief and moral compromise. The core mechanic is bargaining
away your memories, your years and the people you love. That is the
point of the game, not a side effect.

Implied sensuality and gothic decadence. Brothels exist. Romance can be
polyamorous and can be queer. Nudity appears in painted art, never as
the focus. There is no explicit sex. There are no minors in any sexual
or romantic context, ever.

Blood, violence, body horror and ritual imagery, painted rather than
photographic, but not softened.

Villain paths, betrayal and broken oaths. The game records what you did
and does not forget it.

Themes of memory loss, mourning and harm accepted as the price of a
bargain. These are implied and felt rather than shown directly.
