About This Demo

The hotel is closed for the winter. You have the keys.

A seaside hotel on a coast nobody visits between October and March. The owner is away until spring. Her rules are pinned beside the key board in her own handwriting: No guests. I mean it this time. Boiler on at four, not before. The season still has an instalment to make and the boiler eats oil.

The free demo is the first three nights of the season, at the desk, the door and the board of keys.

Somebody knocks.

After the last bus, in the rain, with cash and no booking, and a reason they would rather not give. Nobody comes to this coast in winter without one. You can ask, but you are a stranger behind a desk at night, and every question you ask tells them what you wanted to know.

Four answers at the desk

  • Give a key. They are in the house tonight. Their money is in the box, and so is whatever came with them.
  • Refuse. The last bus has gone. Refusing costs something, sometimes before morning.
  • Give a particular room. The one that matters.
  • Take the money and leave the night out of the book. The cash is yours, not the house's, and the register never says they were here.

The rooms are not interchangeable, and the house teaches you that slowly.

3 looks over the road: you can see who arrives, and so can they. 7 and 8 share a wall, so whoever sleeps in them hears each other. 12 is the only room with a line out. 19 is top floor, at the end, where nobody hears anything at all. A refusal is one bit of information. A room is a sentence: the man who asked about the road went in 19, and the woman who kept looking at the door went in 12, so she could call someone.

Room 24

Pages are missing from the book on the desk. The board still has the key to 24, the previous caretaker's room. You can open it on the first night. What is in there does not stop the season; it changes how you read every knock after it.

After the third night

The full game is the whole season, to the morning the ledger closes. Guests stay, consequences come back at the house, and the town's list and the register disagree about who was here last winter. What changes is the last page of the register: who wrote it, and what they left out. There is no death and no failure that erases a run.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The Off-Season uses generative AI as an assistive tool under human art direction and editorial control. The game's scene plates, room and prop textures and character art were pre-generated with generative image tools and then curated, keyed, composited and hand-corrected by the developer; some character and prop meshes are AI-generated 3D models built from those images. A short looping background video was generated the same way and ships pre-rendered in the build. The music, including the gramophone's record, and most of the sound effects were pre-generated with AI music and sound tools and then selected, trimmed and mixed by the developer; the remaining cues are synthesized by code. The store page's capsule and library art is built from the same pre-generated plates. The narrative text is human-AI co-written under the author's direction and human-edited; the story, the simulation and the game design are the author's. Everything ships pre-rendered in the build - the game generates nothing live during play. No real people are depicted; every guest, room and document in the game is fictional.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The Off-Season is a psychological horror game written for adult players. It is set in a closed seaside hotel in winter, and its pressure comes from isolation, unease and moral compromise rather than from anything shown on screen. You play the caretaker: you decide who is given a room, and you can take a guest's payment without entering the night in the register, which is a theft from the hotel's owner. The season's single thread concerns the previous caretaker and what he left out of that same book. Settings are bleak and dark and some scenes are meant to be frightening. The game contains no violence, no gore, no blood, no on-screen death, no sexual content and no nudity, and there is no fail state in which anyone is killed.
