What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Kingdom Fall is a four-player strategy game. What makes or breaks a game like this is balance between five factions, how smart the bots feel, and how matches play out online with real people. All of that can only be tuned properly with a lot of players. The core game is complete and playable today, so I'd rather open it up now and shape the rest with the people actually playing it.

I'm a solo developer, and Early Access lets me work directly with players. You tell me what's broken, what's unfair and what you want next, and the game grows around that.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I currently expect Kingdom Fall to be in Early Access for about a year. That's an estimate, not a deadline. It may be shorter or longer depending on player feedback and on what the community wants added before full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version already has the complete core game. For the full version I plan to expand and polish it. Areas I plan to work on include:

1. New features and content chosen by community vote
2. More map and game types
3. Language options beyond English
4. Performance improvements for the largest battles
5. More characters to choose from at the table
6. Ongoing balance work across all five factions and their 40 units
7. Adding new units
8. Improved graphics / game art.
”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Kingdom Fall is fully playable from start to finish, in single player and online. It includes:

Five factions: Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and Undead. With 40 units, including two elite units per faction with devastating special attacks. A dice-driven economy on a hex board: claim land, build towns and cities, raise walls, trade at markets and docks, and cast spells from the wizard's tower. Real-time battles: deploy your troops before the fight, choose who holds and who charges, and trigger your general's battle skills mid-fight. Besiege walled towns and watch them crumble. Generals who level up through their own skill trees. Three map types (Standard in three sizes, Castle and Inland Sea), with randomly generated boards. Survival mode against waves of demons, with shareable map seeds. Online play through Steam for up to four players, free-for-all or 2v2. Bots fill empty seats, and a bot takes over if a player drops. Bots at three difficulty levels. Plan your next orders while other players take their turns to speed up gameplay.
A fully narrated tutorial, an in-game rulebook and a unit guide. The whole game is presented as a tabletop board game, unlockable characters you pick rolls your dice.

As with any Early Access game, expect rough edges. Balance is still being tuned, very large battles can lower the frame rate on some PCs, the game is English only, and there will be bugs I haven't found yet.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The Early Access price is about half of the planned full-release price, and I plan to raise the price when the game leaves Early Access. If you buy during Early Access you won't pay again: every update along the way is included.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Players will help decide what comes next. I plan to run regular community votes where you choose which features, content and improvements I work on next, and the results will shape the update roadmap. Beyond the votes, I'll read bug reports, balance feedback and suggestions on the Steam forums [and Discord, if you have one]. I'll post patch notes with each update and share what's being worked on. Balance changes will come from what players report, alongside my own testing.”

About This Game

Kingdom Fall is a turn-based fantasy strategy game combining aspects of several classic board games.

Up to four players face off on a randomly generated hex board. Roll the dice to collect resources from the tiles you claim, then spend them to build towns and raise them into cities, put up walls, trade, and draw spell cards from the wizard's tower. Expand across the map, recruit your armies and send them out to take what your rivals have built. Victory goes to the last kingdom standing.

When armies meet, the fight plays out as a real-time battle. Deploy your troops before the clash, then call on your general's skills as the battle unfolds. Battles can grow to thousands of soldiers, with archers trading volleys, elite units unleashing devastating special attacks, and sieges against walled towns that fight back until they crumble.

Choose from five factions: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Orc and Undead, each with its own units and strengths. Your generals earn experience in battle and grow stronger through their own skill trees.

Play against bots at three difficulty levels, take on up to three friends online through Steam in free-for-all or team games, or see how long you can last in Survival mode against wave after wave of demons. Three map types, a fully narrated tutorial and an in-game rulebook round it all out.

Every game is played as a board game on a table: pick your character, take your seat and roll the dice. Will your kingdom fall?
