What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access gives us the opportunity to build The Hunger Below alongside the players who understand it best. The game's core combat, survival, progression, exploration, and co-op systems are already being built around a demanding, player-driven RPG experience, but the world itself is intended to grow substantially over time.

We want player feedback to help shape that growth, especially around balance, progression, difficulty, quality-of-life improvements, and how existing systems interact while we continue expanding the world with new regions, quests, factions, enemies, equipment, companions, and other content.

Rather than developing the entire game in isolation, Early Access allows us to refine the experience with an active community while steadily building toward the full vision for The Hunger Below.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect The Hunger Below to remain in Early Access for approximately 18 to 24 months.

This is an estimate rather than a fixed deadline. The exact length of Early Access will depend on the pace of development, the scope of additional content, and feedback and support from the community. Our priority is to reach the full release when the game has the depth, stability, and level of polish we want, rather than rushing to meet an arbitrary date.

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is planned to provide the core experience of The Hunger Below, including its combat, survival, character progression, exploration, crafting, and co-op systems.

At the start of Early Access, we currently expect the playable world to include the first 3 of 7 planned biomes, along with a selection of dungeons and smaller sections of the Below to explore.

Over the course of Early Access, we plan to expand the game substantially with additional regions, dungeons, deeper areas of the Below, new quests and storylines, factions, companions, enemies, weapons, armor, crafting options, character abilities, and other content.

We also plan to deepen and refine existing systems based on player feedback, including progression, balance, crafting, survival mechanics, enemy behavior, and the overall structure of the world.

The full version is intended to represent a larger, more varied, and more polished realization of the same core game rather than a fundamentally different experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At the start of Early Access, The Hunger Below will offer a substantial playable portion of its core experience, including combat, survival, character progression, exploration, crafting, and online co-op.

The initial Early Access world is planned to include the first 3 of 7 major biomes, several settlements and explorable locations, quests, factions, a selection of dungeons, and smaller portions of the Below.

Players will be able to create and develop their characters, acquire and craft equipment, improve combat and trade skills, explore the world, encounter different factions and characters, complete quests, recruit companions, and experience the core survival systems.

The game will still be actively in development during Early Access, with additional content, systems, balance changes, polish, and optimization planned throughout development.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Hunger Below will be offered at a lower price during the earlier stages of Early Access. As the game grows with additional regions, quests, dungeons, systems, and other content, the price may gradually increase to reflect the expanded scope of the game. The final pricing structure may change as development progresses.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will be involved throughout Early Access through the game’s Discord server, Steam Community discussions, player feedback, and playtesting.

Feedback will be especially valuable for balancing combat and progression, identifying bugs and usability issues, co-op optimization, refining survival and crafting systems, and helping determine which areas of the game need the most attention as development continues.

We also plan to share development updates, discuss upcoming changes, and gather feedback on new content and systems as they are introduced. While the overall vision for The Hunger Below will remain consistent, community feedback will play an important role in helping me refine and improve the game throughout Early Access.”

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The Hunger Below contains frequent and intense fantasy violence, including melee combat, blood, gore, dismemberment, visible wounds, corpses, executions, and graphic depictions of death. Some environments contain large amounts of blood, human remains, mutilated bodies, and other disturbing imagery.

The game also contains themes of cannibalism, disease, death, religious fanaticism, ritual sacrifice, war, torture, and the collapse of society. Players may encounter undead or severely disfigured human enemies and scenes depicting the aftermath of violence or mass death.

The game includes some non-explicit nudity, including visible female features on certain character models. There are no explicit depictions of sexual acts or sexual assault.

About This Game

THE WORLD BROKE. YET YOU STILL LIVE.

The Sky has shattered, and with it the fragile order that held civilization together.

The dead return carrying sickness in their veins. Kothrell begins to fracture under the weight of catastrophe. Old enemies settle older grudges. Cults emerge from forgotten places, and beneath the earth something stirs that should have remained buried.

The Hunger Below is a top-down dark fantasy action RPG built with the freedom, danger, and depth of old-school role-playing games, brought forward with visceral modern combat, survival systems, and online co-op.

There is no chosen path waiting for you.

Only the one you carve through what remains.

BRUTAL, DELIBERATE COMBAT

Steel is heavy. Armor is heavier. And a bad decision can end a fight before it has truly begun.

Combat in The Hunger Below is deliberate, heavy, and unforgiving. Control the intention of your attacks, read your opponent, parry incoming blows, evade at the right moment, break their guard, and commit when you see an opening.

Weapons demand different approaches. A blade slices through flesh effortlessly. A mace can turn heavy armor against the man wearing it. Spears command distance. Axes bite with terrible force. Crossbows can end a fight before your enemy ever reaches you.

Armor can make you terrifyingly difficult to kill but strength, stamina, mobility, weapon choice, positioning, and skill still decide who walks away.

A peasant with a knife is easy to underestimate.

So is the bolt you never saw coming.

SURVIVAL DOESN'T END WHEN THE FIGHT DOES

Victory does not put the blood back in your veins.

Wounds, exhaustion, hunger, thirst, disease, and dwindling supplies follow you long after the bodies have gone cold. A battle you technically won may leave you limping home, bleeding through your last bandage and wondering whether the prize was worth the cost.

Prepare before you travel. Carry what you need. Know when to press forward and when pride is about to get you killed.

The world does not care that you won the last fight.

FORGE YOUR OWN PATH

Who you become is determined as much by what you learn as by what you kill.

Develop your attributes and combat disciplines. Master the weapons that suit you. Learn trades and practical skills that change what you are capable of producing, repairing, and surviving.

Become a blacksmith capable of maintaining and forging equipment. Study alchemy and turn strange ingredients into medicines, poisons, and other useful concoctions. Practice carpentry and other crafts that allow you to make use of the resources the world provides.

What you invest in opens some possibilities and leaves others beyond your reach.

Your choices extend beyond your character sheet. The people you support, the beliefs you tolerate, the enemies you make, and the decisions you carry with you all help shape your journey.

You are not here to fulfill a heroic destiny, you are here to survive your own story.

A WORLD WORTH FEARING

The world did not become empty when it broke.

It became contested.

Travel through ruined settlements, forests, farmland, ancient roads, strongholds, battlefields, forgotten depths, and places untouched by sane men for generations. Scavenge what remains and discover communities desperately trying to decide what deserves to survive with them.

Meet companions with their own histories, loyalties, beliefs, ambitions, and reasons for travelling beside you.

Encounter factions divided by culture, necessity, faith, hatred, and visions of what the world should become. Kingdoms cling to old institutions. Tribes remember grievances civilization would rather forget. Fanatics see revelation where others see catastrophe.

Religion is not merely decoration. Neither is allegiance.

Different peoples understand the world through different truths, and rarely agree on which of them is worth killing for.

Choose whom you trust carefully.

They are doing the same to you.

SURVIVE ALONE OR TOGETHER

Face The Hunger Below alone or bring friends through online co-op.

Travel together, fight together, pool what little you have, and develop characters whose different strengths can keep the group alive when preparation fails.

One player may know how to mend armor. Another may keep your wounds healing. Another may simply be the bastard standing in the doorway with enough steel to stop whatever is coming through it.

The world will not become kinder because you brought company.

You'll simply have someone beside you when it tries to kill you.

And beneath all of it lies the same question:

What is waiting below?
