About This Game

She dances over the silver lake,
He moans beneath the larch.
Who is the youth? A hunter in the wood.
And who the maiden? I do not know.

— Adam Mickiewicz, “Świtezianka”

A narrative mystery by the lake

In the village of Sielany, a young man has drowned—or so the shore insists. You arrive as a traveler with a party of three companions and a handful of days before the water answers back.

And who is the maiden? is a reading-first adventure: scenes of investigation, testimony, and ritual choice. Story driven through choices and dice trials. What you notice, whom you trust, and which three companions you chose at the start decide how the story closes.

The story is based on the award-winning scenario A kto dziewczyna? by Adam Wołoszczuk, a finalist of Quentin 2019—the competition for the best RPG story.

What you do

  • Assemble a party — pick three of six archetypes. Their domains (Trail, Word, Guile, Steel) shape every trial.
  • Investigate Sielany — manor, inn, dock, wild shore, and quieter places the village would rather leave alone.
  • Keep a detective’s notebook — clues and testimonies stay with you as the days turn.
  • Face trials — risky choices resolve as dice checks against your party’s strengths. Will lets you push back once when fortune fails.
  • Meet what rises — the lake has its own claim. How you speak to it—and to the living—opens different endings.

Eleven endings

The same drowning can end as mercy, bargain, violence, silence, or something the village will not name aloud. Replay to follow another companion, another shore path, another truth.

Tone

Dark Slavic fantasy in the spirit of folk ballad and lakeside superstition—woodcut illustrations, parchment UI, and a soundtrack that stays close to the water. Inspired by Mickiewicz’s Świtezianka, not a retelling of it.
