About This Content

Union Grand Campaign DLC

Fight the Petersburg Campaign from the Union perspective.

The Union Grand Campaign adds a complete 15-mission historical campaign to Civil War: Battle of Petersburg, following the struggle against Richmond and Petersburg from the summer of 1864 through the final Union offensive of April 1865.

Command Union forces as Grant's armies tighten the siege, attack Confederate supply lines, extend the battlefield westward, and finally break through the defenses protecting Petersburg.

The campaign is more than a series of battles. Your army develops between missions, historical formations return throughout the campaign, and battlefield losses can influence the decisions you make before the next operation.

Fight through engagements including:

  • Bermuda Hundred

  • Cold Harbor

  • Opening Assaults on Petersburg

  • Jerusalem Plank Road

  • Battle of the Crater

  • Globe Tavern

  • Second Ream's Station

  • The Beefsteak Raid

  • New Market Heights

  • Peebles' Farm

  • Boydton Plank Road

  • Hatcher's Run

  • Fort Stedman

  • White Oak Road and Five Forks

  • Breakthrough at Petersburg

The four battles from the original Civil War: Battle of Petersburg return as historical anchor battles within the larger campaign rather than appearing as a separate opening sequence.

From Assault to Breakthrough

The Union campaign follows the changing character of the Petersburg Campaign.

Early missions focus on breaking into the Confederate defensive system and exploiting opportunities before reinforcements arrive.

As the siege develops, the focus shifts toward the roads and railroads supplying Petersburg. You will seize strategic ground, destroy Confederate communications, defend exposed positions, and conduct organized withdrawals when operations go wrong.

By the final act, Grant's armies are pressing against an increasingly stretched Confederate line.

At Fort Stedman, repel Gordon's surprise attack and retake the captured Union positions.

At White Oak Road and Five Forks, break the western Confederate defenses and threaten the South Side Railroad.

Finally, launch the Breakthrough at Petersburg and open the way into the city.

Manage Your Army Between Battles

Return to Union headquarters between missions and prepare for the next operation.

  • Preserve and rebuild historical formations

  • Manage campaign funds and reputation

  • Replace battlefield losses

  • Equip eligible formations with historically appropriate rifles

  • Assign suitable artillery equipment

  • Track veteran formations across multiple battles

  • Manage army rations and supplies

  • Decide where resources will have the greatest impact

The campaign uses a historically constrained persistent roster. Units return only when they were historically present or reasonably available for that operation.

A regiment that fought earlier in the campaign can return later carrying its experience, casualties, equipment, and campaign history. Formations assigned elsewhere remain unavailable until they historically return.

Historical Weapons and Siege Equipment

Army improvements are based on historical equipment rather than generic upgrade levels.

Eligible infantry formations can use weapons such as Springfield, Enfield, Lorenz, and other historically appropriate rifles, while artillery batteries can receive different field pieces according to availability.

The Union campaign can also gain access to unique siege equipment, including the massive 13-inch "Dictator" mortar, used against Confederate positions during the Petersburg siege.

Powerful equipment remains limited by availability, ammunition, cost, and historical circumstances. Tactics remain more important than simply purchasing stronger statistics.

Historically Grounded Battlefields

Every Grand Campaign mission takes place on the full historical Petersburg map, with each battlefield positioned around the roads, railroads, waterways, farms, forts, and defensive lines associated with the real campaign.

The campaign visibly moves across the Petersburg theater:

from the eastern defenses of the city,
south along the Weldon Railroad,
west toward Boydton Plank Road and Hatcher's Run,
and finally toward Five Forks and the collapse of the Confederate defensive system.

Battlefield locations, objectives, reinforcement directions, and withdrawal routes are designed around the historical geography rather than reusing generic sections of the map.

Varied Historical Objectives

Victory is not always achieved by destroying the opposing army.

Across the campaign you will:

  • Assault fortified positions

  • Capture and hold strategic objectives

  • Cut Confederate railroads and supply routes

  • Defend newly captured ground

  • Withdraw endangered formations

  • Protect evacuation routes

  • Recover stolen supplies during the Beefsteak Raid

  • Repel Confederate counterattacks

  • Break through entrenched defensive lines

Each scenario is designed around a specific command problem and historical situation rather than simply increasing enemy numbers.

Also Play the Battles Individually

Owning the Union Grand Campaign also unlocks its official historical scenarios for Single Battle, allowing you to replay your favorite engagements independently of campaign progression.

Community-created Scenario Editor battles remain freely playable by all owners of the base game.

Grant has the men, the matériel, and the initiative. Now you must use them. Cut the railroads. Extend the siege. Break the line. Take Petersburg.
