What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The systems are finished. The content isn't, and content is the part that benefits from being played by people who aren't us.

Apoc Wilds has 145 creatures, a capture mechanic where the odds shift as a fight goes on, evolution you choose rather than have imposed, and a type chart and status set that interact in ways we can reason about but can't fully predict. Balancing that honestly needs more play than a small team can generate alone — we want to know which creatures people actually build around, which fights feel unfair rather than hard, and where the difficulty curve bites.

There's a second reason we'd rather be upfront about: Early Access funds the art. Placeholder creature sprites are being replaced with commissioned pixel art, and we can only afford so many at once. Which creatures get done first is a genuinely open question, and we'd rather players answer it than guess.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly six months, depending on how much the roadmap changes in response to player feedback. We'd rather leave Early Access with a finished campaign than hit a date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to add a 16-quest story campaign across three acts, a four-floor Crypt dungeon, commissioned art replacing placeholder creature sprites, and a second region. The target is 6–8 hours of campaign against roughly an hour today. The core battle, capture and progression systems are already complete and aren't expected to change substantially.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Fully playable and stable. 20+ creatures, the capture, evolution, deck, battle and progression systems, the Barrowlands overworld with six encounter zones, rival trainers, shops and a healer are in. Content is the limit, not features — there are currently two quests, so expect about an hour before you run out of authored story.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. Apoc Wilds is discounted during Early Access, and the price will increase when the full version launches. Early Access buyers are funding the story campaign and the art pass, and they keep the game at the price they paid — the increase only applies to new purchases at 1.0.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam forums and our development updates. Balance, difficulty and which creatures get art first are all genuinely open questions, and player feedback will decide them.”

About This Game

THE SKY BROKE, AND SOMETHING CAME THROUGH

The Barrowlands were farmland once. Now a tear hangs over them, and the things that walk out of it don't agree about what happened. Neither do the people. Three factions lay claim to how it should be managed. The Vigil want it closed. The Threshold Concern want it studied, catalogued, and stamped with a company logo. The Unbound think closing it is the only real mistake left to make.

You arrive at Hollowmere Camp with nothing, and all three have a use for you.

What you can play today

  • Seal what you find. Every wild creature can be captured rather than killed — but sealing is a gamble. Your odds rise as its health falls and shift with the creature's tier, so spending a Sealing Card is a real decision.

  • 100+ creatures planned across Cyberpunk, Mythos, Undead and Aberration strains, currently only have access to around 20+ creatures.

  • Evolution is your call. Offered after a battle, never forced the moment a number ticks over. Keep the form you like.

  • A deck and six cards to your hand, not a party. Six active creatures, the rest benched. Choose your hand of creatures for each battle — and swapping onto the field costs your turn, so a bad lead has a price.

  • Fights with moving parts. Poison and Bleed chew through armour by percentage. Stun, Slow and Vulnerable reorder play. Regen and Lifesteal keep you standing. Crit and hit chances are per-move and visible.

  • Progression that doesn't punish a full team. Level to 20, and every creature in your active deck earns from every fight — raise a team without paying six times the grind.

  • The Barrowlands — six zones with their own encounter tables and level bands, rival Apoc Handlers with real rosters, a shop economy in Scrip, and a healer at Hollowmere.

What's being built

Plans, not promises — but this is the order of work:

  • A 16-quest story campaign through the Barrowlands, in three acts, ending beneath it

  • A four-floor Crypt with battle after battle as you try to survive, gated descents and a boss at the bottom

  • Commissioned pixel art replacing placeholder creature sprites, starting with the creatures you meet first

  • The Fracture Coast — a second region, once the Barrowlands is finished

The target is a 6–8 hour campaign. That's what Early Access is funding.

Also included

  • Full controller support with prompts that match your device

  • 3 save slots with Steam Cloud sync

  • 7 achievements and 5 leaderboards — fastest run to Hollowmere, most Handlers defeated, highest creature level

  • Original music across overworld, battle and menus
