About This Demo

THE WINDOW

You are a clerk at Window 8 of the Department of Determinations. A file comes down the desk. A person arrives with it. You have the file, the rulebook, and a clock, and one of those three is on your side.

Stamp ASCEND, DESCEND, HOLD or REFER. The rulebook is not a suggestion and it is not stable — standing orders arrive mid-shift and apply to the soul already in front of you.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

• Ask. Press them, check the record, look for the thing the file left out. Every enquiry costs time, and the queue does not stop.

• Check the record. The standing index keeps everyone you have judged, what you asked them, and what they answered.

• Lost property. Things arrive without owners. Work out whose they are and give them back — at the window, or in the evening against the index.

• The break room. Mail, the noticeboard, notes from the eight clerks before you, and a counter that pays in requisition chits.

• The phone. The dead keep a page. Some of them post about people who came through this desk. Not everyone asking for access is who they say.

THE COST

Nothing here is scored on kindness. A wrong stamp is charged to the Kingdom, and the Kingdom is a place you can watch get worse. So is your own record.

THIS DEMONSTRATION

One shift, about twenty minutes, on the real desk — the same rules, the same instruments, the same consequences as the full game.

It is one run. It keeps no progress between launches, so starting it again starts it from the beginning.

Finish it and the Gate Authority will mention that the queue is not finished. You do not have to stay.
