What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Always Fear The Unknown is built around systems that need real players to
validate: fear profiling, adaptive scare delivery, asymmetric hunter pressure,
and multiplayer pacing. Early Access lets us ship a playable cemetery vertical
slice while we expand maps, hunters, and category-specific events with direct
community feedback.

Our goal is to prove the core loop — profile, survive, escalate — with a
small but polished slice, then grow content and balance in public with the
players who care most about psychological horror and asymmetric multiplayer.
We are committed to regular updates, listening to feedback, and finishing
the full Early Access roadmap rather than treating EA as a permanent state.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately 12–18 months to 1.0.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early Access launches with one playable cemetery map, one primary hunter
(Weaver), skull-key objectives, sanity pressure, and the first live fear
events tied to the profiling system. The full 1.0 release is planned to add:

• Additional maps and environments (beyond the cemetery vertical slice)
• More hunters / antagonist variants with distinct behaviors
• Expanded insanity and fear events mapped to all five profile categories
• Deeper meta progression, matchmaking, and polish pass on UI/audio
• Broader accessibility and settings based on EA feedback
• Full content pass on objectives, scares, and balance tuned with live data

Early Access is the foundation; 1.0 is the complete asymmetric horror
experience we are building toward, not a separate game.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build is a playable Win64 cemetery demo: spawn, objective
guidance, skull-key collection, gate/alarm puzzle flow, hunter pressure,
sanity/fear QTE moments, and an escape win condition. Fear questionnaire
profiling is functional and feeds the first adaptive scare consumer in-match.

What is NOT in the EA launch yet: multiple maps, full roster of hunters,
the complete insanity event library, ranked matchmaking, and long-form
progression systems described for 1.0. For feature details already listed
in About This Game, refer to that section; this EA slice is intentionally
focused on one vertical cemetery experience.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price as we add maps, hunters, events, and
major features during Early Access. Early supporters who buy during the initial
EA launch receive the lowest price; future price increases will reflect the
growing scope of content. We do not plan to run deep discounts during the first
phase of Early Access. The final 1.0 launch price may be higher than the initial
Early Access price, but existing owners keep their access at no additional cost.

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will use Steam community discussions, Discord, and structured Playtest / Next Fest feedback to prioritize balance, fear-event readability, and multiplayer stability. Early Access players can report bugs and suggest tuning for sanity events, Slayer pressure, and puzzle pacing. We will share milestone updates (what shipped, what’s next) and use that feedback to guide our content roadmap through 1.0.”

About This Game

YOUR FEARS SHAPE THE MATCH

Before matchmaking, survivors complete an in-game psychological evaluation. Answers rank triggers across five fear categories — Social, Agoraphobia, Injury, Sexual aggression, and Harmless animals — building a session profile that drives modular fear events during the hunt.

SURVIVE OR SLAY

Always Fear The Unknown targets 1 Slayer versus up to 7 Survivors at full release. Work together to solve environmental puzzles, manage sanity, and escape — or hunt the team as the Slayer. Tension, isolation, and betrayal beats define each match.

THE CEMETERY — PLAYABLE VERTICAL SLICE

Our current demo focuses on a scripted cemetery escape: collect skull keys, disable the alarm, survive the Flesh Weaver, endure a personal fear beat with sanity at stake, and reach the exit portal.

EARLY ACCESS

We are building toward Steam Early Access in April 2027. Early Access allows us to expand maps, Slayer variants, full 1v7 multiplayer, and category-specific event libraries while iterating with the community.
