What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Fallen Crowns is a run-based action roguelite made by a solo developer, and much of the fun lives in the details: how blessings and talents combine, whether a boss is fair, how long a floor should take. The first kingdom is complete and fun to replay today. I want players' runs and feedback to shape balance and pacing while I build the other three kingdoms.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About 12 months. As a solo developer, I'll share progress and plans in regular news posts on the store page.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version completes the story of the Four Kings. Three more kingdoms (the Stormspire, the Verdant Grove and the Shadow Reach) will each bring their own floors, enemies, guardians, Crown Bringer and crown power, ending in the fight against the Wizard King. I also plan more blessings, legendaries and duo blessings, more War Table relics and Oaths, voiced narration for the story, and more languages.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The first kingdom, the Fortress of Valor, is complete and playable from start to finish: four floors of explorable chambers with enemy waves, armoured elites, traps, side paths, chests, keys and a Waystation rest stop. Every floor ends in a guardian, including the multi-phase boss fights against the Warlord and Gorrak the Crown-Eater. Six disciplines and eight hybrid classes, 12 blessings in 3 factions with legendary forms and duo blessings, randomized loot with armour set bonuses, a character creator, and the Last Hearth camp with the Blacksmith, Vault, War Table relics and Oaths. Full controller support, Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud saves. English only for now. Expect rough edges and balance changes between updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will rise when the full version launches. Everyone who buys during Early Access gets every update, including the full release, at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam Community Hub discussions and regular news posts. As a solo developer, I read every piece of feedback and every bug report myself, share my plans before each update so players can weigh in, and tune balance based on how players' runs actually go.”

About This Game

Long ago, four Kings and a Wizard joined their power to seal the Abyss. For an age, the Seal held.

Then the Kings grew old, and the Wizard grew hungry. He tore the Seal open, and the demons of the Abyss poured through. One by one, the Four Kings fell, and their crowns passed into the hands of monsters.

You are no king. No noble. No chosen one. But the crowns do not wait for the worthy. They wait for the strong.

A living kingdom to explore

Fallen Crowns is a third-person action RPG set in one large, open kingdom. Walk out of a walled market town into farmland, river valleys, barrow hills, a siege camp and the old king's keep, with no loading screens between them. Townsfolk go about their day, raiders roam the roads, and patrols notice you before you notice them.

The sun rises and sets, nights fall dark and lantern-lit, and the weather turns from clear skies to fog, rain and thunderstorms.

Quests, levels and loot

Follow the ! and ? marks to the people of the kingdom. Captains, smiths, millers and priests need help, and their quest lines take you from level 1 to 10 across the whole realm: clear bandit camps, hunt down beasts, scout the siege lines, retake the keep's great hall and choose your reward from the gear they offer. Bounties on the Quartermaster's board give you something to do between story quests.

Every enemy has a level. Fight things your own size and you earn your keep. Pick a fight with something stronger and you will feel it.

Combat with weight

  • Guard and parry: block with your weapon, or time it perfectly to turn a blow aside and open the enemy to a crushing riposte.
  • Break their poise: wear an enemy down until they stagger, then finish them with an execution.
  • Charge your heavy attacks, dodge through blows with a perfect roll, and sprint on a shared stamina bar.
  • Every weapon fights differently: greatswords, greataxes, sword and shield, two blades at once, bows, polearms and staves, each with its own moves.
  • Readable enemies: every swing has a wind-up you can learn, and elites and packs fight together.

  • Six classes: Warden, Hunter, Wizard, Rogue, Warlock and Paladin, each with its own starting kit, weapons, armour type and spells.
  • Mix them freely: put talent points into any class. Invest deeply in two and you unlock one of eight hybrid powers, like the Battlemage, the Arcane Archer or the Cursed Blade.
  • Gear that shows: every helmet, chestpiece and weapon you equip changes how you look, and matching armour sets grant bonuses.
  • Create your champion: choose a species, body, face, hair and colours in the character creator.

Gates across the kingdom lead down into crypts, mines and forges full of treasure and things that guard it. At the bottom of the deepest ones wait the bosses: huge, multi-phase fights with a stagger bar to break and attacks you have to learn. Bring them down and claim what they were guarding.

Each of the four kingdoms is held by a monstrous Crown Bringer, a creature twisted by the stolen power it wears. Defeat it and its crown is yours, along with a permanent crown power. Claim all four, and the Wizard King is waiting.

Early Access includes the whole first kingdom: the open world, its town and quest lines up to level 10, its dungeons and bosses, and its Crown Bringer. The other three kingdoms and the Wizard King will arrive in updates during Early Access.

Full controller support, Steam Deck settings, Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud saves.

Fallen Crowns is made by a solo developer.
