What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“MISFORTUNATE has reached a feature-complete stage, but balancing a competitive strategy game requires feedback from a wide range of players. Early Access will allow us to refine game balance, improve the multiplayer experience, polish the interface, and identify issues that may only become apparent through extended community play.

Player feedback will help shape the final balance of units, upgrades, resources, events, and overall match pacing before the full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect MISFORTUNATE to remain in Early Access for approximately 12 months.

This estimate may change depending on player feedback, testing results, and the amount of additional balancing or technical work required. Our priority is to release the full version when the game is stable, polished, and provides a consistently enjoyable multiplayer experience.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to include improved balance, additional polish, a more refined user interface, expanded accessibility and quality-of-life options, improved multiplayer stability, and further optimisation across supported platforms.

During Early Access, we also plan to refine the game's units, event cards, economy, progression, match pacing, tutorials, and player feedback systems. Additional content may be introduced where it meaningfully improves the game, although our primary focus will remain on polishing and balancing the existing experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is feature-complete and playable, with the game's primary board, movement, resource, ownership, upgrade, event, elimination, and multiplayer systems implemented.

Players can participate in complete matches from beginning to end. Development during Early Access will focus primarily on balancing, bug fixes, multiplayer reliability, interface improvements, performance optimisation, accessibility, and general presentation.

As an Early Access release, players may still encounter bugs, balance issues, connection problems, or features that require further refinement.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“MISFORTUNATE is expected to be offered at a lower price during Early Access to reflect its unfinished status and to thank players who support the game during development.

The price will increase when the game leaves Early Access, particularly as additional polish, improvements, and content are instroduced. Any planned pricing changes will be communicated to the community in advance.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will be an important part of MISFORTUNATE's development throughout Early Access.

Players will be able to share feedback, report bugs, suggest improvements, and discuss balancing through the Steam Community Discussions, the official Discord server, and organised community playtests.

We plan to review feedback regularly and provide development updates explaining current priorities, upcoming changes, and the reasoning behind significant balance or design decisions. While not every suggestion will be implemented, community feedback will help us identify common issues and determine where development efforts will have the greatest impact.”

About This Game

MISFORTUNATE is a turn-based strategy board game where careful planning, calculated risk and a little luck can build an empire - or bring it crashing down.

Travel across a richly illustrated board, purchase valuable Units, manage your resources, trade with other players, craft powerful Items, and strengthen your team as you compete to eliminate every rival standing between you and victory. Every turn matters: where you move, what you purchase, when you upgrade, what you trade, and how much you are willing to risk.

Build your economy using Tokens, Honey, Totems and Crystals gathered throughout the match. Claim Units before your opponents do, then develop them through Copper, Silver and Gold upgrades to increase the tolls paid by anyone unfortunate enough to land on your holdings.

But ownership alone will not guarantee victory.

Event Cards can move players across the board, alter resources, force difficult decisions, create unexpected opportunities or place someone directly in danger. Shops, Portals, auctions, traps, the Pitfall and other special spaces add tactical choices beyond simple movement, while Items and crafted tools can influence dice, positioning, movement and turn order.

MISFORTUNATE is built around competitive team play. Coordinate with your teammate, recover from setbacks, exploit openings and apply enough economic pressure to eliminate rival teams. Play through Steam or LAN multiplayer, or add bots with Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme difficulty levels to change the challenge.

The objective is simple: survive the unexpected, outmanoeuvre your rivals, and be the last team standing.

Build Your Position

Purchase Units across the board and turn them into increasingly valuable assets. Upgrade your holdings to strengthen their tolls and increase the pressure on opponents who enter your territory.

Manage, Trade And Craft

Tokens are only part of your economy. Balance Tokens, Honey, Totems, Crystals and your Item inventory while deciding when to spend, save, sell, trade or craft. The right Item at the right moment can be worth more than raw wealth.

Control The Board

Branching routes, Portals and special spaces create meaningful movement choices. Items can alter dice and positioning, traps can punish careless movement, and tactical effects can suddenly change who controls the strongest part of the board.

Adapt To Misfortune

No strategy survives unchanged. Event Cards can reshape positions, resources and priorities without warning. Strong players plan ahead while keeping enough flexibility to recover when the board refuses to cooperate.

Compete With Players And Bots

Build teams for competitive multiplayer through Steam or LAN, and include bots when you want to fill out a match or change the opposition. Bot difficulty can be set to Easy, Medium, Hard or Extreme.

Eliminate The Competition

Reduce your opponents’ ability to recover, take advantage of their mistakes, disrupt their plans and force rival teams out of the game. The last surviving team claims victory.
