What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The Crimson Scales is already a complete single-player campaign, with over 50 scenarios and all 11 playable characters from the original board game implemented. We are releasing it in Early Access because we want to continue developing the digital version with the community rather than treating the current version as the final product.

Our primary goal during Early Access is to add multiplayer, allowing players to experience the campaign together with friends. We also plan to develop solo scenarios and continue improving the existing game based on player feedback.

Feedback from players will help us identify issues, improve usability and quality of life, refine the digital implementation of the game's rules, and determine which improvements should be prioritised during development.

We are committed to continuing development throughout Early Access and seeing The Crimson Scales through to its full release. Our goal is for the 1.0 release to provide a polished digital adaptation of the complete Crimson Scales experience, including multiplayer.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently estimate that The Crimson Scales will remain in Early Access for approximately 6–12 months.

During this period, our primary development goal is to add and test multiplayer, including multiplatform multiplayer. We will also develop the solo scenarios and continue improving and polishing the existing single-player campaign based on player feedback.

The exact duration may change depending on the development and testing of these features. We would rather extend Early Access if necessary than release the full version before these features are ready and properly tested.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version contains the complete single-player Crimson Scales campaign, including all 11 playable characters and over 50 scenarios from the base board game.

The primary difference in the full version will be the addition of multiplayer, including multiplatform multiplayer, allowing players to experience the campaign together with friends. We also plan to add solo scenarios during Early Access.

In addition to these new features, the full version will include the improvements, bug fixes, balancing changes and quality-of-life improvements made throughout Early Access based on development and community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version contains the complete single-player Crimson Scales campaign.

All 11 playable characters from the original board game are implemented, along with more than 50 playable scenarios. The campaign includes its scenario flowchart, events, shop, party achievements, character progression, equipment and other campaign systems.

Characters can level up, unlock new ability cards, select perks and acquire equipment as they progress through the campaign. Combat, enemy AI and the game's rules are automated, while the player is prompted whenever a situation requires a choice or contains an ambiguity.

The digital version also includes automatic saving, multiple save files for separate campaigns, and an undo function.

The complete campaign is currently playable from beginning to end. The main features not yet implemented are multiplayer and solo scenarios, both of which are planned for development during Early Access.

For a complete overview of the currently implemented features, please refer to the "About This Game" section above.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Crimson Scales will be free to play throughout Early Access and after the full 1.0 release. There will be no charge for purchasing or playing the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will be an important part of the development of The Crimson Scales during Early Access.

We will use feedback from players to identify bugs and usability issues, improve the existing single-player experience, and help prioritise future development. In particular, we want to hear from players about the digital implementation of the game's rules, character balance, difficulty, user interface, quality of life features and overall gameplay experience.

A major goal of Early Access is to develop multiplayer. Feedback from players will help us shape this feature as it is developed, including identifying problems and improving the experience of playing the campaign with others.

Players can share feedback, report bugs and discuss the game through the Steam Community forums. We will actively monitor these discussions and use the feedback we receive to help guide development and prioritise future updates.”

About This Game

The Crimson Scales, created by Boardgame613, is the acclaimed fan-made expansion for Gloomhaven. Originally released as a physical board game through multiple printing runs and enjoyed by gamers around the world, The Crimson Scales is now fully digital, bringing the complete campaign and all of its characters and scenarios to your screen.

The Crimson Scales is a standalone game and does not require ownership of Gloomhaven.

A new Gloomhaven campaign

Take control of a band of mercenaries working for a mysterious Valrath woman and embark on a sprawling campaign containing more than 50 scenarios. Follow the story, make your way through a branching scenario flowchart, and discover the challenges that await your party.

Between scenarios, manage your party, visit the shop, unlock new opportunities, and pursue unique party achievements as your mercenaries grow stronger.

Tactical turn-based combat

The Crimson Scales uses the familiar tactical combat system of Gloomhaven. Control your entire party and carefully plan each character's actions as you battle enemies across a wide variety of scenarios.

Every character has their own unique abilities, strengths, and playstyle. Choose which cards to play, manage your resources, coordinate your party, and adapt your strategy to the situation on the battlefield.

Enemy behaviour is handled automatically by the game's AI. When the rules require a choice or an ambiguous decision, the game prompts you to make the appropriate selection.

Develop your mercenaries

All 11 playable characters from the original Crimson Scales board game are available. Develop your party throughout the campaign by:

  • Leveling up your characters

  • Unlocking new ability cards

  • Selecting perks and improving your character builds

  • Purchasing equipment from the shop

  • Completing party achievements

Your choices shape how your mercenaries develop and how you approach the challenges ahead.

A fully digital experience

The digital version of The Crimson Scales automates the rules and bookkeeping of the board game, allowing you to focus on tactical decisions rather than managing components.

The game includes:

  • The complete Crimson Scales campaign

  • 50+ playable scenarios

  • 11 playable mercenary characters

  • Character leveling, ability cards and perks

  • Equipment and an in-game shop

  • Events and party achievements

  • A branching scenario flowchart

  • Automated enemy AI

  • Automated game rules and bookkeeping

  • Multiple save files for separate campaigns

  • Automatic saving

  • Undo functionality

The current Early Access version is a complete single-player campaign. Multiplayer and solo scenarios are planned for development during Early Access.

Prepare your party, master your mercenaries, and venture into a dangerous new Gloomhaven campaign in The Crimson Scales.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Almost all of the art in the game has been created by Alexandr Elichev, the artist of the original Gloomhaven board game. A few missing art assets for summoned creatures for characters for this game were generated with AI. We hope to be able to replace these with official art as time progresses (and when I have a stable job to be able to pay for this).

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

In this dark fantasy game, players command a group of mercenaries that often kill their enemies to win scenarios. The violence is depicted in a cartoony way. The trailer shows examples of this. The topics conveyed in the story are not references to real life topics, but can be considered mature.
