What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nightroot is my first game, developed largely solo. The core of the game — exploration, atmosphere, ghosts, the main puzzle — is complete and playable from start to finish. However, before releasing a full 1.0 version, I want to take the time to fix remaining bugs, balance the difficulty, and add extra content (new areas, new notes, new events) based on player feedback. Early Access lets me do all of this alongside a real community, rather than working in isolation.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I'm planning for roughly 6 to 12 months in Early Access, giving me time to stabilize the game and add the planned content. This timeline may be adjusted if community feedback shows that more time is needed to get things right — I'd rather take the necessary time than rush out a final version.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will be richer and more polished than the current Early Access build. Planned additions include:

- Additional areas and environments to explore
- New notes and story elements to expand the lore
- Bug fixes and performance optimizations
- Better difficulty balancing (ghost pacing, puzzle hints)
- Sound and visual adjustments based on player feedback
- Possibly new gameplay mechanics, depending on feedback received”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable from start to finish: forest exploration, ghosts, note collection, and the code puzzle are all functional. That said, some minor bugs may still be present, balancing isn't finalized yet, and the content is more limited than what's planned for the 1.0 release.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The game will be offered at a discounted price during Early Access, as a thank you to players who support the project early on and are willing to play a version still in development. The price will increase slightly at the 1.0 release, once the full content has been added.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to stay closely engaged with feedback throughout Early Access, through:

- The Nightroot Steam forum and player reviews
- Regular updates explaining changes made based on community feedback
- The ability for players to report bugs directly and see their suggestions shape future development

As a solo developer on my first project, community feedback will be essential to making Nightroot the best game it can be.”

About This Game

NIGHTROOT

About This Game

Nightroot is a first-person horror exploration game set in a forest that shouldn't exist anymore - and yet does.

You wake up alone, deep in the woods, with no memory of how you got there. The trees are too tall, the paths lead nowhere, and something is moving just outside the reach of your flashlight. To escape, you'll need to explore, listen, and piece together the truth of what happened here.

Long ago, this forest belonged to a family sworn to keep it sealed - the Vanes, Keepers of the Roots. Their ritual failed. The forest spread. The village disappeared. And the spirits that were meant to stay buried never left.

Scattered across the woods are torn journal pages and carved messages left behind by the Vane family - fragments of a story that, if pieced together correctly, may reveal the code you need to open the way out. Read carefully. Nothing here says exactly what it means.

Features

- A living, breathing forest - dense, dark, and disorienting, designed to make you doubt every direction.

- Ghosts that hunt, not just haunt - stay alert, or stay lost forever.

- Environmental storytelling - piece together the fate of the Vane family through notes, carvings, and scattered objects.

- A puzzle worth solving — a hidden 4-digit code stands between you and freedom. The forest won't hand it to you.

- Sound-driven tension — no jump scares for the sake of jump scares. Every whisper, every snapped branch means something.

Story Excerpt

Three children were born beneath the roots of that tree. Only one walked away alive.

Somewhere in these woods, the truth is still buried — literally. Every note you find is a piece of a family that tried to protect the world from what lives beneath the forest floor, and failed. Whether you find your way out is up to how closely you're willing to listen.
