What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Grimveil is a persistent-world MMORPG, and games like this are best built together with the people who actually play them. Early Access lets us tune combat balance, the economy, and progression systems using real player behavior instead of guesswork, and lets the community help shape which zones, classes, and systems we prioritize next. Because Grimveil is designed as a continuously evolving world rather than a game with a fixed finish line, Early Access is also the most honest way to describe where we are: a solid, playable core that we intend to keep expanding for as long as players are enjoying it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“1-2 years”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to keep growing Grimveil's world substantially — additional zones, new mob types, and more biomes to explore beyond what's available today. We also plan to expand guild and social systems, including more group and endgame content for players who want long-term goals beyond leveling. On the character side, we intend to add more classes, skills, and build variety over time.

Alongside new content, we plan to continue polishing what's already there — combat balance, performance, and stability — based on community feedback. We'd also like to invest in improved art and animation (including player character sprites) as the game grows; this is an area we know is currently rougher than we'd like, and upgrading it is a priority if Early Access supports further development.

As with any evolving live game, we can't promise specific features will ship or set a date for when Grimveil will be "finished" — but our intent is for Grimveil to keep getting bigger and better throughout Early Access and beyond.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Grimveil currently offers a fully playable core MMORPG experience. The game features one large, continuous open world to explore, with 6 distinct classes (Knight, Paladin, Cleric, Wizard, Warlock, Hunter), each with roughly a dozen unlockable abilities. Combat, PvP and PvE, is fully functional, and the world is populated with dozens of unique monster types, from common enemies to bosses.

Core MMORPG systems are already in place and working: persistent characters and accounts, inventory and equipment, crafting and item imbuing, fishing and gathering, an auction house economy, NPC vendors, quests and a reputation/faction system, guilds, parties, friends lists, trading, and chat.

What you won't find yet is a large amount of additional zones beyond the main world, or the deeper endgame and guild-vs-guild content we have planned. Some art assets, particularly player character sprites, are also placeholder-quality and are a priority area for improvement. Early Access is where we'll expand the world's size and content library and continue polishing based on player feedback.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Grimveil is free to play, both during Early Access and after. On Steam, the listing price covers your first month of premium account access; after that, premium account time and any additional cosmetic or convenience extras can be purchased separately. We're committed to keeping Grimveil fair to free players — premium offerings are meant to support ongoing development, not to create significant pay-to-win advantages. We don't currently have plans to change this model when we leave Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're building Grimveil's Discord as the hub for feedback, bug reports, and discussion with the dev team directly. We plan to share a public roadmap and regular patch notes so players can see what we're working on and why. New content — zones, classes, systems — will go through community playtesting before wider rollout, and we intend to take direct player input on combat and economy balance seriously, since a healthy MMORPG economy is something that's very hard to get right without real player behavior to learn from.”

About This Game

Grimveil is a classic-style MMORPG built from scratch by a solo developer.  No engine template, no asset flip, just a hand-built world and a hand-built server to run it on.

Choose from 6 classes: Knight, Paladin, Hunter, Warlock, Wizard, and Cleric; and carve out your own path through a world of open zones, dangerous mobs, and old-school progression. Allocate stat points, grind weapon skills through actual use, hunt for loot, and gear up one drop at a time.

Team up with a party of up to 5 to take down tougher threats and share the spoils, or link up with a guild to build something more lasting. Add friends, track your battles, and make your mark in a world where every system from combat, economy, and loot was built by one person who's still actively adding to it.

Features:

  • 6 distinct classes with their own playstyles

  • Real-time party system with loot rules and class-diversity bonuses

  • Usage-based weapon skill progression...get better by doing

  • Full loot and economy systems, from monster drops to NPC shops

  • Guilds and a friends list to build your community

  • An actively developed world, with new content shipping regularly

Grimveil is a passion project first — built by someone who loves this genre and wanted to make the game they wanted to play. If you miss the feel of the MMORPGs that got you into gaming, come see what's being built.
