Get rich on other people's money.

Pledge your company shares, sign high-interest promissory notes, and put every penny you can raise into your first steam engine.

Once the engine turns, the money rolls in. But you want more than a factory: you want the raw materials, the transport and the retail too. Build a supply chain no one can break, or get caught in a price war, run out of cash and go into liquidation.

Cornering the Market

Buy up the coal mines one by one, and every boiler in the country has to burn your overpriced coal. Rivals who fall in line join your cartel and split the market with you. Those who don't, you undercut below their costs until they go bankrupt.

But cheap imports keep coming in through the harbor, the railway companies raise freight rates whenever they like, and sooner or later the prosecutor's antitrust summons will land on your desk.

The Business of Parliament

Rewriting the rules pays better than opening ten more factories.

Fund candidates' campaigns, lobby lawmakers, and win the vote that decides the bill. One tariff bill is enough to make imports lose to you in your own city.

But lawmakers own factories and shares too. The man who cashed your check one day can be sitting at your rival's table the next, voting against you.

A Hundred Grudges

This world has over a hundred named characters, and every one of them is looking out for themselves.

People who owe you a favor will be easier to deal with. People you've cheated will charge you dearly to work with you. Break a promise, and they'll wait for the day you're short of cash and come asking for help, then kick you while you're down.

Profit and Its Price

Lengthen shifts, cut wages, hire cheap child labor, and slip an official an envelope to get your permit approved the next day. Your books look a lot better right away.

But workers will organize and strike, the papers will put the scandal on the front page, and the official who took your money can give you up in court at any time.

A City in Your Name

The game begins in the Steam Age, moves through the Railway Age and ends in the Age of Finance.

You can stick to industry and build a manufacturing empire, or swallow a whole sector and form a trust. In the end, run your railway out into unsettled land and build a city that bears your name.
