About This Demo

Three brothers and their father

Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov — an old man, a buffoon and a sensualist, a father who cannot remember when he last gave his sons a thought. They grew up apart, in other people's houses. Now all three have come back to his home at once.

Dmitri has come for his mother's inheritance, which his father will not hand over, and for the woman the two of them cannot divide.
Ivan — with a thought that chills him too: if there is no God, everything is permitted.
Alexey, the youngest, a novice from the monastery, is the only one in that house who wants nobody to perish.

Not one of the three loves the father, and each of them fails to love him in his own way.

What is in this demo

The first two books of the novel — 13 chapters out of 96: a family that grew up apart, and the day at the monastery where they all come together for the first time.
  • The same text — word for word, nothing rewritten.
  • Both ways to read — unabridged (about three hours) and abridged (about an hour).
  • Seven languages, and in each of them the novel itself, not a translated menu.
  • Ten painted scenes, characters at full height, six optional minigames.
  • The novel asks you now and then what you would have done. Your answer does not change the novel, but the game remembers it.

Your progress carries over

If you buy the novel after the demo, the full game takes your place in the text and your finished chapters once, at first launch, and you go on from where you stopped. It never writes back into the demo.

And then the whole novel

The full version has all 96 chapters, down to the last page. The demo ends where everything is only beginning.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Image and video: the backgrounds, character portraits and animated backdrops in this demo, and the artwork on this store page, were created with generative models, then selected and edited by hand.
Text: the prose of the novel is not generated. It is Dostoevsky's own text and historic public-domain translations. The exceptions are the Italian and Spanish translations, and about thirty lines of the Chinese, which were produced with a language model from the Russian original and then reviewed by a human.
In-game audio: not created with generative models. The ambience is built from CC0-licensed field recordings (Freesound) and plain DSP synthesis. Credits and licences ship with the demo in CREDITS.txt.
Music: the demo itself contains no music. Music appears only in the marketing trailer on this page, and it was generated with Suno.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This demo is the first two books of Dostoevsky's novel, unabridged and word for word. Everything described below is his, and all of it is text: the paintings show no blood, no bodies and no nudity.
These opening books introduce a father who has spent his life in drink and debauchery, who kept his own house as a den of it and abandoned his children; the family quarrel that follows is played out in a monastery cell and ends in scandal. A woman confesses to a monk that she did away with her husband. Another mourns the child she has buried. There is talk of crime and of the death penalty, atheism argued in earnest, and a running joke about a man who was murdered in a brothel. Drunkenness is constant, and one page reports a young woman who threw herself from a cliff in imitation of Ophelia.
The complete novel goes considerably further than this demo does; its own store page describes that content separately.
