What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Beyond the Grey is playable and free, but it isn't finished. We'd rather people play it now and watch it develop than sit on it until we decide it's done.

Early Access also lets us hear from players outside our own testing. Accessibility is where that matters most to us: the game has no accessibility options yet, and we'd rather be told what people need than guess at it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect somewhere between six months and a year and a half. Beyond the Grey started as a student project, and how quickly it moves depends on how much time the team has. We'd rather give a wide estimate and update it than name a date we can't keep.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add weather, and to make seasons affect the island rather than only the calendar. We plan to add more villagers, and to improve how conversations with them work. Not only that, but we also plan to finish what's currently incomplete: full controller support, accessibility options, and saves that carry across updates.

Beyond that there are things we would like to add but won't promise. A deeper relationship system with the villagers is the main one. More to grow, craft and build is the other.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The full loop is playable. You can farm in small and large plots, plant seeds and fruit trees, use sprinklers, gather wood, stone, crystal shards and forest amber, and craft and upgrade tools at a workbench. Beehives and the apple press produce over time. You can decorate with fences, gates, statues, banners and storage. Four villagers live in town, and their moods change what they say. A market opens once a week. Boat travel takes you to other islands, each generated when you arrive. There is a day and night cycle, you can save at any time, and all text is available in English and French.

Not in yet: weather, seasons that affect anything, complete controller support, and accessibility options.

One thing to know before starting a long run: saves do not currently carry across updates. When the save format changes we refuse the old file rather than load it broken, so an update can cost you your island. We will say so in the patch notes whenever it happens.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. Beyond the Grey is free, and we intend to keep it free after Early Access. We have no plans for paid content or DLC.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read the Steam discussions, and we'll post what has changed and what we're working on next. We're opening a Discord server for anyone who wants to talk to us directly, and we intend to post updates on Bluesky.

Accessibility feedback is what we most want early on, since it affects work we haven't started yet and is much harder to add later.”

About This Game

You used to wake up to a screen. Now you wake up to a window.

You had a job in the grey city. It paid, and it took. One morning you stopped, got on a boat, and came here instead.

The island doesn't ask much of you. There's soil, there are trees, and there's a town further along the path where people are pleased to see you. The rest is yours to decide, and there isn't a wrong answer.

A day here

Most people start with the soil, since it's right there. Wheat and rice go in a simple plot. A banana tree needs a bigger one, and more patience than you'd expect. None of it stops growing while you're somewhere else, so there's no reason to hover, and if watering by hand gets tedious you can buy a sprinkler and stop thinking about it.

Then the path, because you'll want an axe and the axe needs wood. Chop, mine, haul it back to the workbench. Crystal shards and forest amber turn a starter axe into one that takes a tree down in a single swing. Somewhere in the middle of all this you will put up a fence you didn't need, and a statue you definitely didn't, and a chest, so you can stop carrying your entire life around with you.

Some things you set going and leave alone. A beehive fills with honey over several days. An apple press turns a mediocre harvest into juice worth taking to market.

The people further along

Alex, Chloé, John and Kaito live here. Their moods shift from day to day, and so does what they'll tell you, so it's worth going back to someone you already spoke to.

The market opens once a week. The shopkeepers buy what you've grown and sell you the things you haven't got round to making. The supermarkt is out of bread again. Three people will mention it.

And then stop

Sit by the fountain at sunset. It's been running longer than anyone in town remembers. The streetlights come on at dusk, which is an easy way to tell the hour once you've stopped checking. When you feel like it, take the boat out to another island; every one is generated fresh, so nobody has seen the one you land on. Take the long way home. The shortcuts will still be there tomorrow.

Save whenever you want. English and French text.

Productivity isn't a personality. You can just grow tomatoes.
