What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I want to incorporate community feedback on the following:

- Game balance
- Ideas for facilities and units
- Whether online multiplayer is something players actually want”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan for roughly 3 months in Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned changes for Early Access:
- Incorporate community requests and ideas, including game balance.
- A feature to customize the gender and physical traits (skin, hair, eye color, etc.) of crew members (the units that make up your force).
- Add many more maps.
- Improve CPU AI.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“- The main game and the map editor are both fully playable.
- You can share the maps you make.
- Data compatibility will be preserved after the full release.
- At the moment, all crew are female characters. (They're cute.)
- Some of the finer support features are still missing.
- Parts of the game balance may still be rough in places.
- The CPU's thinking may do something silly now and then.
- Note that some stills and sprites are incomplete or use placeholders in the Early Access version.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It won't change drastically, but the full release version will likely be a little more expensive.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I read through every request and idea, including those about game balance and UX.
Please understand that balance and design ideas are heavily affected by play style, so I can't always implement them.
Feel free to send your feedback via the Steam Community, X, or email.”

About This Game

Banana Kingdom is a retro strategy sim inspired by the Famicom's Gashapon Senki.

I stripped away the complicated numbers, so the rules are simple and easy to grasp, but deep enough to keep veterans on their toes.

Randomness is pushed as close to zero as it gets. Your judgment and strategy translate directly into results.

Secure all kinds of bases, produce units, and claim victory!

A battle royale with up to 5 factions.

Nearly 1,000 battle maps, plus endless possibilities with the map editor!

Share the maps you make with the community, on your homepage, or across social media.

🌱 Colorblind support is included.

Players with color vision difficulties can play without issue.

GAME RULES

Each turn, produce units, move them into battle, and expand your territory!

Beat the enemy faction or fulfill the map's victory condition to win.

VICTORY CONDITIONS

- Annihilation: A faction whose unit count hits 0 loses.

- Capture the Castle: The castle is a faction's home base. Lose it and you're out.

- Capture the Golden Banana: The Golden Banana grants any wish, and claiming it is the whole point of this game.

Though it seems a wish beyond the banana's own power can't be granted...

- Defeat the Banana King: A faction that loses its Banana King loses the game. Protect him at all costs! - Statue of the Banana God: A divine statue that looks like it's wearing a spacesuit. It can grant you Golden Banana Troopers—carry it back to your own castle to win.

COMMANDERS

Charismatic characters serve as your avatars, issuing orders to your units.

Each Commander has a distinct skill, and when the skill gauge fills, they can turn the tide of battle with overwhelming force.

MAP EDITOR

Comes with a map editor to freely build and play your own stages.

Make capture maps with castles, or annihilation-only maps where units are placed from the start.

Packed with handy tools!

- Rectangle drawing and fill

- Mirror or rotate-copy the board to easily create left-right symmetric or 180-degree symmetric maps.

- Random biome generation for natural-looking maps in a single click.

- Place fully upgraded, powerful facilities right from the start.

- Manage and share your maps as files.

- Data you create in the demo carries over to the full version.

BASES & FACILITIES

Bases of every kind are the linchpin of the battlefield. Capture them to grow your army's strength.

Bases yield Capital (war funds), and spending Capital upgrades them for even better performance.

"Put your Capital toward producing units, or toward upgrading bases?" is a crucial decision!

A few of the facilities are introduced below. There are plenty more!

- Village

Earns Capital each turn and slightly heals the unit standing on it.

No upgrades.

- Fort

A unit production facility. All sorts of units are produced here.

It also replenishes one infantry per turn to any under-strength unit standing on it.

*Replenishment costs no Capital, so pulling a weakened unit back to a Fort is a key technique!

Upgrade it to replenish multiple infantry per turn.

- Farm

Greatly heals the unit standing on it.

Upgrade it to produce Banana Troopers.

- Watchtower

Scouts a wide area.

Only effective in fog-of-war mode, where enemy units are hidden.

- World Tree

Heals nearby units.

Upgrade it enough times and...!?

- Thorn Hollow

A high-defense spot suited for holding ground.

- Airship Yard

Produces airships that can carry units aboard.

Upgrade it to build armed airships as well.

- Tide Fort

Produces aquatic combat units and sailing ships.

- Wish Crystal

On capture, grants one of 7 wishes.

(Unlike the Golden Banana, which wins the game outright, there are only 7...)

Once a wish is granted it becomes a broken crystal, supplying a small trickle of Capital thereafter.

- Dragon Egg

When a unit captures it, a powerful dragon is born and joins the faction that broke it. By the way... where did the unit that was riding it go?

- Warp Gate

Warps to another Warp Gate. Cannot be captured. In the map editor, you can set up to 3 types of "links"—tag gates as A, B, or C so that only gates with the same tag connect.

- Blessing of Wings

A unit standing here leaps 2 tiles ahead, ignoring terrain.

Cannot be captured.

UNITS

A unit is a team of 4 crew.

You can field units like "4x Infantry," or mixed units like "1x Knight, 3x Fighter."

Defeat enemy units to level up and boost your stats.

Here are some of the crew that make up units. There are many more!

- Militia

Weak and cheap. Defeating Militia won't level up the enemy.

- Knight

A powerful, well-rounded crew good at both combat and capturing.

Modest movement range.

- Scout

Moves nimbly through mountains and forests, with a wide scouting range.

- Falconer

An anti-air crew that deals double damage to airborne crew like airships, dragons, and angels.

- Cavalry

A Knight on horseback. Well-rounded with high movement, an all-rounder.

Slightly pricier than a Knight, with a bit less power.

- Hunter

Attacks at range.

Place a wall of units between yourself and the enemy for protection.

- Mage

A powerful ranged attacker.

Very weak to melee, so protect them with everything you've got.

- Manta Trooper

Aquatic infantry. Very easy to handle.

- Orca Trooper

Aquatic cavalry. Conquer the seas.

- Airship

Carries up to 2 units at once.

- Banana Trooper

The weakest crew. Anyone who defeats a Banana Trooper drops back to Level 0.

And to think it's so nutritious...

STORY

In pursuit of the Golden Banana, said to grant any wish, foolish people raised armies and went to war...

...or so went the setting of the board game the adventurers were getting fired up over again tonight.

The end.
