Windborne is a live weather wallpaper and a gentle collection game. It renders global weather as a hand-drawn map — wind streams, rain falls, cyclones turn — and when the right weather arrives, small visitors drift in on the wind for you to spot and collect. No forced interaction, no punishment.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Windborne's weather rendering and core experience are already complete and usable, but the "collect visitors with the weather" gameplay is still growing. We want real player feedback early — which weather should bring which visitors, how the codex should feel, how the desktop ecosystem stays rewarding over time — so the community can help shape its direction, rather than us building it all behind closed doors.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 6 to 12 months, depending on how quickly the visitor codex grows and on player feedback. We won't rush at the cost of the calm, unobtrusive experience at its core.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version plans to significantly expand visitor variety and rarity, deepen the desktop ecosystem, add more weather layers and region presets, and refine the codex, settings, and localization based on feedback. The core framework stays the same; content and polish grow.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is stable for daily use as a desktop wallpaper — real-time global weather map, wind particle animation, live typhoon tracking, bilingual (中文/English) city labels, multi-monitor support, plus a set of collectible weather visitors and a desktop ecosystem. See the feature list under "About This Game."”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price as we add new content and features. Players who purchase the game during Early Access will not need to pay extra for future updates.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to continuously gather player feedback through the Steam Community hub, including discussions, comments on announcements, and surveys. We will pay particular attention to suggestions regarding visitor design, weather behavior, the desktop ecosystem, the collection book, and settings.
We will regularly review and organize this feedback, and use it to adjust our development and iteration priorities. Whenever possible, we will also explain in our update notes how community feedback has influenced the game, allowing players to take part in its continued improvement.”

About This Game

Windborne is a live weather wallpaper that quietly lives on your desktop — and a gentle, unobtrusive collection game. It paints the world's real weather as a hand-drawn map behind your windows: wind streams, rain falls, cyclones turn slowly. And when the right weather arrives, small visitors drift in on the wind — waiting to be noticed, and collected.

It never fights for your attention. No forced interaction, no punishment, no timers. Keep working, browsing, watching — the weather and its visitors simply drift by in the background. Glance over now and then, and you might find a rare guest who only came today.

A living weather map

  • Real-time global weather, rendered by the wallpaper itself — a soft cartoon palette with ink coastlines only, no borders, no clutter

  • Live wind-flow particle animation; switch between wind / rain / temperature color layers

  • Live tropical cyclone tracking: past and forecast tracks, a category-colored spinning icon, particles swirling around active storms

  • City labels in 中文 or English, switchable in one click

  • Worldwide presets: global overview, continents, ocean basins, East Asia detail — or custom coordinates

Guests on the wind

Different weather brings different visitors. Clear skies, sudden rain, high winds, the edge of a rain band — each condition invites its own little creatures, each with its own rarity, coming and going with the weather. There's nothing to grind: leave it on your desktop, and the codex fills in on its own, day by day. Tend a small desktop ecosystem, too, and watch it grow with the weather and the hours.

Restraint by design

  • Low-contrast, slow, and never in the way — it's wallpaper, not a pop-up

  • Zero forced interaction, zero punishment: miss a moment and it's fine — the weather comes again tomorrow

  • Light on your system: only the particle layer animates; weather refreshes every 30 minutes by default (adjustable)

  • Multi-monitor support, with per-display region and layer settings

Data & disclaimer

Weather snapshots come from Windy-Data-API (built on Open-Meteo AWS open data / NOAA GFS); cyclone data is parsed from GDACS; map outlines are from Natural Earth. An internet connection is required for live data; when offline, the map and cities still render and cached data is shown.

This is an ambient visualization and casual game. Weather and storm information is simplified and stylized, and may be delayed, cached, interpolated, or unavailable. Do not use it for emergency, navigation, aviation, maritime, or any safety-critical decisions. Not affiliated with , Open-Meteo, GDACS, NOAA, or Natural Earth.
