Coming Soon To Early Access

The developers of this game intend to release as a work in progress, developing with the feedback of players.

Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Locomotive Works is being developed as a systems-driven train-building and freight simulation. The core idea is that players design steam locomotives, use them on real freight jobs, and give feedback on whether those designs feel interesting, useful and satisfying to drive.

Early Access is the right fit because player feedback can directly improve the balance of the locomotive designer, the freight jobs, the economy, the driving feel, and the way the game explains locomotive performance. I want to involve players while the core systems are playable, but still flexible enough to improve.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The current plan is for Locomotive Works to remain in Early Access for one to two years.

That may change depending on player feedback, the amount of content added, and how much refinement the core systems need. However, I believe that one to two years should be enough time to incorporate player feedback and develop the game into a solid, enjoyable steam locomotive design and freight simulation, as the initial Early Access release is planned to include the core locomotive physics, controls and main gameplay loop.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to expand the amount of playable content, locomotive parts, freight jobs, design challenges, routes, polish and balancing.

During Early Access I plan to improve and expand the locomotive designer, add more components and locomotive types, refine the freight economy, add more contracts and proving trials, improve the railway world, and continue balancing how locomotive design affects hauling ability, speed, grades, cost and running performance.

The aim for the full version is a more polished train-building and freight simulation, with a broader set of design options and jobs, refined presentation, and more detailed systems based on player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The initial Early Access version is planned to focus on the core gameplay loop: designing steam locomotives from components, using them to haul freight, earning money from jobs, and proving whether each build can handle practical railway challenges.

Players should expect a playable but still-developing game. The Early Access version is planned to include a working locomotive designer, steam-era freight driving, a railway network with multiple routes and industries, a first set of freight jobs and proving challenges, and locomotive performance systems where design choices affect practical results.

Some areas will still be in development during Early Access, including content variety, economy balance, environment polish, user interface polish, audio, tutorials, and the range of jobs and locomotive parts.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game is planned to launch into Early Access at a price that reflects its initial amount of content and polish.

If the game grows significantly during Early Access, with more content, features and polish added over time, the price may increase before or at the full release. However, I do not plan to use a higher full-release price unless the game has grown enough to justify it for players.

Any major pricing changes will be communicated clearly in advance where possible.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will be especially important for the locomotive designer, driving feel, freight jobs, economy balance and overall usability.

I plan to use Steam forums, Steam announcements and player feedback to understand which locomotive parts are most useful, which jobs are enjoyable or frustrating, how well the game explains performance, and where the simulation should be deeper or more approachable.

Because Locomotive Works is built around designing locomotives and proving them in practical railway work, player feedback on what feels satisfying, confusing, too easy, too difficult, or missing will help shape development during Early Access.”

About This Game

Build steam locomotives. Haul freight. Prove your engine.

Locomotive Works is a train-building and freight simulator set in the early twentieth century golden age of steam. Design steam locomotives and use them to deliver freight across a working railway network. Find out whether your engineering choices can handle real jobs.

Choose the parts that make up your locomotive, then use it to haul freight, earn money, climb grades and complete delivery contracts. A good-looking engine is not enough: weight, cost, pulling power, speed, range and running performance all matter.

Build locomotives that do real work

Design steam locomotives from practical components such as chassis, boilers, cabs, tenders, chimneys, domes and fittings. Choose paint colours and add wear and grime to give each locomotive its own working character. Your choices affect how the engine performs, what it costs to build, how much it can haul, and which jobs it is suited for.

A small engine may be cheap and efficient, but can struggle with heavy loads. A larger freight locomotive may have the power for steep grades, but it costs more to build and run. The aim is not just to make a locomotive that looks right — it must be able to do the work.

Run freight across a working railway

Take freight jobs, move wagons between industries, and choose the right locomotive for the route. Loads, distance, gradients and running costs all affect whether a job is a good match for your current engine.

Earn money from successful work, invest in new builds, and improve your locomotive designs as the jobs become more demanding.

Prove your design

Once your locomotive leaves the depot, the railway becomes the test. Heavy trains, steep climbs, braking distances, fuel, water, and boiler pressure all matter when you are trying to make your deliveries.

Drive the engine yourself and see how your build performs in practical conditions. A locomotive that looks powerful in the workshop still has to prove itself on the grade.

Design for real railway challenges

Trains feel heavy, momentum matters, and poor design choices have consequences. Clear controls and readable feedback help newcomers get started, while heavier loads, steeper grades and more demanding jobs give experienced players a real challenge.

Drive through mountains, forests, and open countryside across a varied freight railway. Design the locomotives you need, meet the challenges of the routes, and make the deliveries your customers depend on.
