What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I want to continue working on this game, improving enemy AI, a couple of new biomes and adding some new obstacle / units (mixing up some of the basic chess pieces behaviors and maybe a crazy thing to spice things up). But I also need more people to do playtest and get more feedback to finalize some details.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to continue improving this game approx. 5 / 6 months after publication date. After that it will appear as completed and will not continue being worked on.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Right now, 4 biomes, 10 visual models for chess pieces, a specific set of obstacles per biome. I will not make the game bigger, I will try to add more units, obstacles and biomes to make things a bit more varied but without altering too much the main idea of a chess-like game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Totally playable using keyboard, keyboard + mouse or joystick, in game save data, achievements, some stats. Working biomes and obstacles procedural generation working fine.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. I will not change the price not even after all the changes recommended per the community are applied. This is just a way of testing and improving my programming skills and give a token of gratitude to the community, if the game gets to be seen, improved and is bigger / better after the early access period of time, it will continue to have the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will take their feedback received via Discord or sharing interactions on the Youtube Channel and continue improving the game during the time defined as early access. Community input will be used to improve things like the enemy AI, the obstacles added, the biomes, the units, etc. Game inner workings will also be affected per this without altering too much the main gaming loop.”

About This Game

The game of kings, reimagined for modern warfare.

Voxel Gambit takes the timeless rules of chess and injects them with the strategic depth of a turn-based tactical game. Forget the flat, predictable 2D grid; here you will face battles in full 3D environments, where the terrain, your resources, and the enemy's intelligence change with every match.

From Pieces to Modular Warriors Your units are not just wooden figures or images painted on 2D squares. Pawns and bishops have taken up arms as Monks, Rogues, Clerics, and Rangers. Each piece in your squad features a specific design and stats, with their equipment and armor moving in unison in the heat of battle. Utilize the Effort system and Action Points (AP) to decide whether it's worth risking it all on an attack that pushes beyond your limits or if you should maintain a defensive stance.

Procedural Battlefields You will never play the same match twice. The procedural generation engine creates unique maps tailored to 5 different size scales. Adapt your tactics to the terrain conditions as you march across 4 distinct biomes that boost specific piece types:

  • Meadows: Open fields ideal for bishops to utilize their long-range attacks.

  • Mountains: Rugged terrains that benefit the signature L-shaped movement of the cavalry.

  • Caves: Enclosed, labyrinthine spaces where the pawns' scouting will be crucial.

  • Deserts: Open areas filled with rocks and dead trees that will hinder your path across the battlefield, but where finding a straight line to the enemy will highly benefit pieces acting as rooks.

Multi-Layered Artificial Intelligence You are not facing a traditional chess AI. The enemy analyzes the battlefield using a three-layered tactical behavior system. They will evaluate whether to adopt one stance or another according to the state of the battlefield, while each piece executes expert movements based on its class.

Key Features:

  • Deep Tactical Combat: Classic chess mechanics expanded with directional damage, optional friendly fire, and dynamic attack ranges.

  • Total Tactical Camera: Command your troops from a strategic top-down aerial camera, or zoom into the action to get a free, up-close view of the damage you deal to your enemies.

  • Immersive HUD: Dynamic on-screen dialogues, character portraits, and a clean interface that gives you total control over your squad's stats.

  • Turn-Based Planning: In a single turn, you can completely wipe out your opponent or be left at the mercy of the artificial intelligence.

  • Biome Buffs: Each biome benefits a specific piece type by granting it extended action range—but beware, this also applies to enemy units.

  • Mirrored Units: Carefully plan which units you bring to the battlefield; they will be the exact same ones the AI uses to make your life miserable.

  • Versatile Inputs: Command the battlefield however you feel most comfortable. Voxel Gambit features full support for keyboard-only gameplay, traditional keyboard and mouse setups, and gamepads/joysticks.
