What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Game Dev Empire is a deep management simulation with many interconnected systems, including game development, employees, technology, marketing, platforms, finance, publishing, hardware, digital businesses, and acquisitions.

The core experience is already playable, but balancing such a complex simulation and making its long-term progression clear and enjoyable requires feedback from players with different strategies and play styles.

Early Access will allow us to polish the existing systems, improve onboarding and usability, test long campaigns, fix edge cases, and make the economy and competition more satisfying. We want to develop the game together with the community while preserving our vision of a deep, welcoming video game industry simulation.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Game Dev Empire to remain in Early Access for approximately 18–24 months.

This is an estimate rather than a fixed schedule. The final timeline will depend on player feedback, the time required to balance the existing systems, and the scope of the larger industry-simulation features we plan to explore. We will communicate development progress openly and update the roadmap if the timeline changes.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early Access will include the main playable management experience: founding and growing a studio, hiring and organizing employees, creating and releasing games, researching technology, managing marketing and finances, competing across changing platforms, publishing games, developing hardware, operating digital businesses, and acquiring companies.

The main focus of Early Access will be polishing and balancing these systems, improving onboarding, strengthening long-term progression, and ensuring reliable saves, performance, and usability.

Our long-term direction is to expand the simulation beyond managing the player's own company. We plan to explore a more dynamic industry in which major NPC companies make meaningful decisions about employees, projects, offices, finances, subsidiaries, acquisitions, and competition. We are also exploring deeper ownership and capital-market systems, including company shares, investments, mergers, and a future stock market.

These features will be developed carefully and may evolve based on player feedback. The full release is intended to bring the planned systems together into a more complete, balanced, and polished experience.

More features are planned, and all feedback will be taken into account, so the roadmap will continue to grow.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current build is a totally playable version with the core simulation in place. Players can found a studio, hire employees, create and release games, organize teams, research technology, run marketing campaigns, respond to changing platforms and markets, manage finances, publish games, develop consoles, operate digital businesses, and acquire other companies.

The simulation supports long-term play across the historical video game industry from 1980 onward, as well as open-ended sandbox progression.

Our current focus is on polishing and balancing the existing systems, improving onboarding and interface clarity, testing long campaigns, fixing edge cases, improving performance, and validating save compatibility. Some systems are still being tuned, and the presentation and progression will continue to evolve before and during Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, the plan is to mantain the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“All feedback will be given serious consideration, allowing the roadmap toward version 1.0 to be shaped with the help of the community.”

About This Game

Build the studio that shapes gaming history

It is 1980. You have a small studio, limited cash, and fifty years of a changing industry ahead of you. New genres will rise, platforms will fight for players, technology will transform what games can be, and rival companies will compete for every sale.

Game Dev Empire is a deep, single-player management simulation about growing a video game company from its first modest release into a diversified industry empire.

Create games through every era

Every release begins with a chain of decisions. Choose a genre and theme, target one or several platforms, select an engine and technologies, set the project's size, appoint a director, assemble a team, and decide where its time should go.

  • Combine genres with themes, each with different strengths and market potential.

  • Guide projects through design, production, debugging, and release.

  • React to development dilemmas, control scope, manage bugs, and decide when a game is ready to ship.

  • Turn successful releases into franchises with sequels, ports, patches, and DLC.

Build teams, not just products

Hire people with different skills, salaries, seniority, morale, and energy. Organize them into dedicated teams and departments for development, research, marketing, and hardware. Train promising employees, manage studio culture and benefits, and grow into larger offices without letting payroll outrun your revenue.

Read the market and earn attention

A great game can still disappear without the right audience. Track genre popularity and saturation, platform audiences, competing releases, and changing quality expectations. Announce projects, run campaigns through era-appropriate media, release demos, attend industry expos, set prices, and keep older games visible after launch.

Compete in a living industry

Dozens of rival companies release games, build reputations, publish other studios, and manufacture their own platforms. Choose a historical market structure or an alternative simulation where the console business emerges differently in every run. Sign publishing and software contracts, negotiate exclusivity, or become a publisher yourself.

Grow beyond game development

Success opens new ways to build your empire:

  • Research technology and create or license game engines.

  • Design, develop, manufacture, price, and market your own consoles.

  • Open a digital storefront and launch a subscription service.

  • Acquire other studios and manage them as subsidiaries.

  • Build lasting intellectual properties, win awards, and leave a mark on the industry.

A fifty-year journey with an open-ended future

The industry evolves from 1980 to 2030 as technology, expectations, platforms, and competitors scale across the decades. After that milestone, your company can continue in an open-ended sandbox. There is no single prescribed way to win—but bankruptcy is always possible if ambition outruns cash flow.

Deep systems, welcoming presentation

A warm pixel-art interface, an animated studio view, clear reports, adjustable difficulty, and a built-in encyclopedia make a detailed business simulation easier to understand. Play in English or Spanish, adjust the interface scale, reduce motion, and control time at your own pace.
