About This Game

Project carried out with support from the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy of Rio de Janeiro, through the Literatura do Rio ao RJ Notice.

"Bentinho wrote his book as though his memories were facts. Allow me, then, to tell my side."

You think you know this story.

The boy and the girl on Rua de Matacavalos, separated by a wall. For over a century, only one version existed — the one written by Dom Casmurro, a bitter, self-made recluse who called his own obsessions the truth.

Now it's Capitu's turn.

Eyes like the Tide is a visual novel based on Dom Casmurro, the 1899 masterpiece by Joaquim Machado de Assis, widely regarded as the greatest novel ever written in Portuguese and one of the defining works of world literature. At its center is a question that has divided readers, scholars, and entire generations: did Capitu betray her husband, or was she condemned by a man who couldn't bear uncertainty?

Told entirely from Capitu's perspective, Eyes like the Tide follows Capitolina — Capitu, for short — from her teenage years on a quiet Rio de Janeiro street all the way through marriage, motherhood, and the unraveling that Machado de Assis only ever showed from the outside. You walk beside her through every choice.

Bentinho or Escobar? Loyalty or freedom? The ending is yours to decide.

A PERSPECTIVE A CENTURY IN THE MAKING

For over a hundred years, Capitu has been judged through someone else's words. Here, she has her own voice, sharp, self-aware, sometimes wry, always conscious of being watched.

Follow her story from lazy childhood afternoons at the wall between houses, through first love and the looming threat of the seminary, into marriage, the birth of her son Ezequiel, and the slow fractures that jealousy opens. All the while, Escobar grows larger in the narrative and in Capitu's choices.

YOUR CHOICES SHAPE HER STORY

The game tracks two invisible relationship metrics that evolve across the whole arc: affection, trust, impatience, distance. How you choose to respond, whether you comfort, challenge, go quiet, or push back, shapes not just the relationships around Capitu, but who she becomes.

She warns you herself: her memory isn't perfect. What was truth and what was longing, only you can judge.
