What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Pirate Twist is a solo-dev project, and Early Access is where a roguelite gets tuned.

The core game is complete and playable today: a three-sea campaign per captain, five captain archetypes, a ship you fit out across 14 berths from a catalogue of 18 modules, real-time broadside combat with directional component damage, branching charts, and a named boss captain at the end of every sea.

Early Access lets us work with players on the part of development that one person cannot do alone. Balance in a roguelite comes out of thousands of runs, not one developer's. Build ideas, edge cases, the fight that feels unfair on the third sea: those come from players. Shipping now means the rest of the game gets built with the people playing it, instead of behind a closed door for another two years.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 6 to 12 months from the July 2026 launch. 1.0 lands once the planned additions (pick-your-crew, a multi-ship fleet, more captains and modules, an endless mode) and the balance work behind them feel finished.

We would rather move that date than ship a 1.0 that has not earned it. If the timeline shifts, it gets said out loud in the patch notes.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early Access already ships the complete loop, so the full version is about depth rather than filling in gaps. Planned for 1.0:

- Pick-your-crew: choose your specialists at the tavern instead of taking the roster your captain comes with
- A multi-ship fleet, commanding more than the single vessel you sail today
- More captains, modules and encounter types, guided by what players actually ask for
- An endless mode for after the campaign, on top of the per-captain Ascension ladder
- Steam Deck input bindings and a performance pass
- More audio, and in-game localization

These are our plans, not guaranteed commitments. The order may change with community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core game is complete and playable. A campaign is three seas, usually a single sitting. Save and quit at any point, including mid-broadside, and the fight resumes where you left it.

In the build today:
- Five captains, two open from the start and the rest earned by winning campaigns, each with a signature crew and their own buff
- 18 modules across 14 berths: cannons, a mortar, hull plating, storage holds, repair stations, a crow's nest, and rare ram prows and hull bracing taken from sieges and bosses
- Six crew roles with passive bonuses, set by your captain
- Branching charts of seven to ten columns: pirate fleets, uncharted waters that resolve into flat calm, storms, lucky wrecks or the Scourge, a five-wave port siege, the Chandler's Trading Post, and the Sea Cave
- Real-time broadside combat with directional damage to hull, sails and crew, four ammo types, and stern rakes that deal more than double damage
- A wind and sailing model: gears instead of a thrust key, veering wind, sail damage that costs speed, and squalls with lightning
- A per-captain Ascension ladder that raises the threat after each win
- A Ship Maintenance port (mount, dismount, dismantle) and a rebuild-after-defeat economy
- A guided first voyage, and a skip for players who would rather learn by sinking
- 35 achievements, a global leaderboard, lifetime stats, Steam Cloud saves
- Windows and macOS, Universal on Mac (Intel and Apple Silicon)

Not in yet: pick-your-crew, a multi-ship fleet, an endless mode, verified Steam Deck support, a native Linux build, and in-game localization.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the base price as significant content lands: more captains, more modules, more encounter types. Buying during Early Access means paying a lower base price than we plan to charge at 1.0, and every Early Access update is free.

Beyond the launch discount and Steam's seasonal sales, we do not plan to run discounts during Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Pirate Twist is a solo-dev project, and Early Access is where it finds its real shape.

- The Discord is where dev posts, patch notes and bug reports live, and where the developer is actively reading and responding
- We read Steam reviews and Discord feedback. When something changes because a player asked for it, the patch notes say so
- We track bug reports from Discord and share updates when fixes ship
- A public roadmap, so you know what is coming even when the dates move
- When a big system lands, we ask for impressions before the next pass rather than after it
- When a request does not fit the design, we say so rather than leaving it unanswered

A closed playtest program has run since before launch and continues alongside Early Access, with broader participation.”

About This Game

ONE SHIP AGAINST THREE SEAS

You get a sloop with one gun a side, a captain with something to prove, and a chart full of bad options. Everything else, you take off somebody.

Three hostile seas stand between you and the end of the campaign, and each one ends in a duel with a named pirate captain. Come home richer, or don't come home at all.

BUILD THE SHIP YOU DESERVE

Fourteen berths. Eighteen modules fighting for them. By the third sea your little sloop can be a floating battery, a hull too thick to crack, or a ram that opens a brigantine like a crate.

Light cannons for speed. Heavy cannons for holes. A mortar that never stops raining. Iron-shod beakheads torn off dead boss captains. What you become depends on what you find, what you can afford, and what you dare to sail into.

BROADSIDES, NOT CROSSHAIRS

No cursor. No twitch aim. Swing your broadside onto the target and the guns roar the moment it enters the arc.

Chain shot shreds sails. Grape shot cuts down crew. Fire shot keeps burning long after you have sailed on. And a shot through the stern, down the whole length of the enemy's deck, deals more than double damage.

The pirates know every one of these tricks. They will use them all on you.

THE WIND HAS OPINIONS

You don't hold a thrust key. You set your sails and take the sea as you find it, while the wind veers mid-fight. Some battles open in dead calm, and a dead calm always breaks: distant thunder, the ship's bell, then lightning picking its targets.

NO TWO CHARTS ALIKE

A port under siege for five waves. A trader who will sell you a sealed crate and let you find out. A sea cave where your torch burns out in under a minute. Uncharted water that turns out to be a lucky wreck, or the Scourge.

Every sea branches across seven to ten columns of choices, and you won't know which of six boss captains you drew until the chart shows you.

SINK. REBUILD. SAIL AGAIN.

Losing a fight doesn't end the campaign. Limp back to Port, pay the shipwright, and take that sea again.

Gold never survives a run. Your captain does. Five captains, each with a signature crew and a buff that bends the whole run around it, and nine skills that stay learned whether you win or sink. Beat a campaign and that captain sails again at a harder Ascension tier.

How far up the ladder can you take them?

MORE TO COME IN EARLY ACCESS

A campaign fits in a single sitting, and you can save and quit anywhere, even mid-broadside. Pirate Twist is built by one developer, in the open, and the Discord shapes what sails in next: more captains, a fleet to command, and an endless sea for after the campaign.
