What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Rhythm Racer already has a substantial playable foundation, but I do not consider its final direction or feature set decided.

Players frequently suggest ideas that go beyond the current racing and music-reactive gameplay, and Early Access gives me the opportunity to explore those ideas with the people actually playing the game rather than deciding the full scope alone.

One of the larger possibilities I am considering is an entirely new action-focused mode in which players shoot targets, obstacles or enemies while travelling through a tube generated around the music. This could develop in several very different directions, and I first need to understand whether the community wants that kind of mode and what they would expect from it.

Stream Mode also has considerable room to grow. Its current version provides the foundation, but questions remain around how many participants can be shown clearly inside a single tube, how viewers join and interact, how queues should work, what benefits channel supporters might receive, and how to expand participation without making the screen unreadable or the experience unfair.

Early Access allows me to prototype ideas, gather feedback and discover what players believe is missing from Rhythm Racer. That feedback will help determine which systems are expanded, which new modes are developed and what ultimately becomes part of version 1.0.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I currently expect Rhythm Racer to remain in Early Access for approximately three to six months.

This estimate may change depending on which ideas the community responds to and the scale of the features selected for further development. A new game mode or a major expansion of Stream Mode could require several rounds of prototyping and community feedback.

I would rather let the final scope develop around the strongest ideas than commit to a fixed feature list or release date before players have had the opportunity to influence it.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to build substantially on the current foundation, although the precise feature set will be shaped during Early Access.

A major feature under consideration is a new action-focused mode built around shooting targets, hazards or enemies while travelling through the music-generated tube. The rhythm and structure of the music could influence target placement, enemy behaviour, weapon effects, scoring opportunities or larger encounters.

This mode is still at the concept and prototype stage. Community feedback will help determine whether it should be developed, what form it should take and whether it belongs in the final game. Possible directions could include score-attack challenges, survival-style runs, rhythm-linked shooting, power-ups, larger set-piece encounters or a more abstract target-shooting experience.

Stream Mode is also planned to evolve beyond its current implementation. Areas being explored include:

• Supporting more viewer-controlled ships without overcrowding the tube
• Alternative ways of displaying large numbers of participants
• Improved joining, queue and participation controls
• Additional viewer commands and interactions
• Distinctive ship colours, effects or behaviours for channel supporters
• Priority participation options and streamer-controlled privileges
• More control over how viewers and AI ships behave during a run
• Different Stream Mode events, challenges and participation rules

Difficulty is another area being considered for expansion. The underlying systems can already alter obstacle density, gem frequency, reaction time, speed behaviour and overall intensity. Community feedback will help determine whether these options become simple difficulty presets, detailed player controls, distinct gameplay profiles or separate competitive categories.

Players may also identify features, modes or options that I have not yet considered. Part of the purpose of Early Access is to discover what the community believes Rhythm Racer is missing and decide which suggestions are realistic and valuable enough to pursue.

Not every proposed idea is guaranteed to reach the full version. Features may be prototyped, revised, combined with other ideas or left out if they do not improve the game or receive enough community interest.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is fully playable and already contains a substantial amount of content.

It currently includes more than 110 built-in tracks, support for compatible music supplied by the player, single-player gameplay, local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players, AI opponents with multiple difficulty levels, Rhythm Cruise for longer tracks, Stream Mode, customisation options, Steam achievements, leaderboards and ghost racing.

The current game provides the core music-driven racing experience and the foundation for further development. However, the final selection of modes, player options, Stream Mode systems, difficulty controls and competitive features has not been decided.

The proposed action-focused shooting mode is not currently included. Expanded Stream Mode participation, supporter behaviours and large-community display systems are also still being explored.

Players should expect a substantial playable game, while understanding that its final scope and some of its systems may change considerably during Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes.

Rhythm Racer will be sold at a lower price during Early Access. I plan to increase the price when the game reaches version 1.0 to reflect the additional development, features and content introduced during Early Access.

The final price has not yet been decided, but any increase will be announced in advance.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will help determine what Rhythm Racer still needs and which possible features are developed for the full release.

I plan to use the Steam Community Hub to share concepts and prototypes, discuss possible additions, gather feedback and ask players which areas they most want expanded.

One major discussion will be the possible action-focused shooting mode. I want to understand whether players are interested in it, what they would want to shoot, how closely firing should be connected to the rhythm, whether the mode should contain enemies or abstract targets, and whether it should focus on scores, survival, challenges or larger encounters.

Streamers and viewers will help shape the future of Stream Mode. Their feedback will be important in deciding how to show larger numbers of ships inside one tube, how participation queues should work, what controls streamers need and what cosmetic or gameplay privileges could be offered to channel supporters without making the mode confusing or unfair.

The community will also help decide how difficulty should be presented, which competitive categories are useful and what other features or modes appear to be missing from the current game.

I expect some ideas to be released initially as prototypes or experimental features. Community response will determine whether they are expanded, redesigned, combined with other ideas or removed before version 1.0.”

About This Game

Your music becomes the track

Ever wanted to ride inside a song? Rhythm Racer turns any track into a 360° racing tunnel and drops you inside it.

Every song is analysed and used to build the track around you. Bass, drums, melody and changes in the music all affect what happens as you race.

Bring your own library or choose from 110+ built-in original tracks. MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A and FLAC are supported.

The same song always generates the same track, so once you have played it you can start learning it, improving your run and chasing a better score.

Single Player

Pick a song and take on the track.

Move between 12 lanes around the tube, collect gems, avoid barriers and try to finish with the highest score you can.

Single Player is about learning the music and improving your own run. Play something familiar, throw in a song you have never tried before, or work your way through the built-in library.

You can also race against leaderboard ghosts, including your own previous best runs.

Multiplayer

Race against up to three other ships on the same track.

Multiplayer supports 2-4 player split-screen and can also fill empty slots with AI opponents across different difficulty levels.

Play against friends, AI, or a mixture of both.

Because everyone is racing the same generated track, knowing the song can make a real difference.

Cruise Mode

Cruise is for when you want the music and the visuals without turning everything into a competition.

Choose a longer track or playlist and keep going through a continuous sequence of changing tubes.

There is still plenty happening around you, but the focus is less on chasing scores and more on putting some music on and enjoying the ride.

Stream Mode

Stream Mode lets your Twitch chat join the game.

Viewers type !play in chat to enter the race. They do not need to own or install Rhythm Racer. Their ships are controlled by AI and appear directly in the game alongside the streamer.

That means a stream can turn into a race involving the people watching it rather than leaving them on the sidelines.

Viewers can join the queue throughout the stream, giving the streamer a constantly changing group of racers to play against.

It works with any of the music available in the game, including the stream-safe tracks included with Rhythm Racer.

Scores & Stats

Every run contributes to your history.

The Scores & Stats area shows your lifetime totals, individual song history, achievements and ship usage.

You can see which ships you have played, which ones you use most often and which ones you still need to race with.

For players who like chasing scores or completing achievements, it gives all of that progress somewhere to live.

Make it yours

Choose from 20 ships and customise their colours, then change the tube itself with different rail colours, patterns and themes.

There are millions of possible colour combinations, so the same track can look very different depending on how you choose to play it.

Ghosts and leaderboards

Every song has its own leaderboard.

You can race against your own previous runs or download another player's ghost and race alongside them.

Their ship follows the exact movements they made during their run, so if somebody beats your score you can see where they gained the advantage.
