About This Game

Rutterkin is a first-person fantasy card roguelite set in a tavern where rival wizards drink, gamble, and settle their differences over a deck of cards.

Explore the tavern, find a wizard willing to play, place your bet, and take a seat. Every match is another chance to earn the gold you need to stay ahead of an ever-growing debt.

PLAY A MAGICAL TWIST ON SCOPA

Face rival wizards in one-on-one card duels inspired by Scopa, reworked around spellcasting and combat.

Both you and your opponent have Health and Mana. Play combinations of cards to trigger spells that deal damage, restore Health, manipulate the deck, burn enemy cards, and alter the course of the match. A duel ends when one wizard loses all their Health or chooses to surrender.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Explore the tavern freely in first person and search for wizards willing to gamble.

  • Choose how much gold to wager before each duel.

  • Play one-on-one card matches where combinations trigger magical effects.

  • Use Health and Mana strategically to survive increasingly dangerous opponents.

  • Multiply the pot during matches and turn small wagers into huge payouts.

  • Buy and equip Artifacts that enhance spells and change how you approach each duel.

  • Face wizards with different Health, Mana, skill levels, and Artifacts of their own.

  • Drink between matches to recover Mana — but risk blacking out if you go too far.

  • Earn enough gold within three days to pay the debt collector and keep your run alive.

  • Protect valuable Artifacts between runs by earning the bartender's trust.

BET YOUR GOLD. GROW THE POT.

Choose how much gold you want to wager before each duel. Some wizards demand a higher minimum bet before they are willing to play.

Your wager starts the pot, but it does not have to stay that way. Certain spells can multiply its value during the match, turning a small bet into a huge payday.

Win and the final pot is yours. Lose and your wager is gone — and you wake up the next day.

KNOW WHO YOU'RE PLAYING

Every wizard follows the same rules, but not every wizard is equally dangerous.

Opponents vary in Health, Mana, decision-making, and the Artifacts they bring to the table. Some may be worth challenging early. Others can punish you for sitting down unprepared.

Choosing who to play — and how much you are willing to risk against them — is part of every run.

STACK THE ODDS WITH ARTIFACTS

Spend your winnings at the bar on Artifacts that modify your abilities and change how you approach a duel.

Choose which Artifacts to equip before a match to enhance existing spells, add new effects, and create powerful combinations. Your opponents can bring Artifacts of their own, so even a familiar matchup can quickly become more dangerous.

Carrying valuable Artifacts also comes with a risk. Pass out with them in your pockets, and you may wake up to find that another wizard helped themselves while you were unconscious.

THREE DAYS TO PAY

The debt collector gives you three days to come up with the gold.

Make the payment and another deadline begins with an even larger debt. Fail to reach the required amount in time, and your run is over.

There is no fixed number of matches per day. Keep gambling for as long as you can stay on your feet, or walk away while you are still ahead.

DRINK TO KEEP THE MAGIC FLOWING

Mana fuels your more powerful spells, and once it runs low, you will need a way to recover it.

Between matches, buy a drink at the bar to restore Mana and keep playing. Drink too much, however, and you risk blacking out, bringing your day to an early and unpleasant end.

Whether you collapse from a lost duel or one drink too many, waking up means another precious day has passed.

THE TAVERN IS PART OF THE RUN

Move freely through the tavern in first person. Talk to the bartender, search for opponents willing to gamble, watch other wizards play their own matches, and decide where your next pile of gold might come from.

The tavern is more than a menu between card games. It is where every run unfolds.

SAVE SOMETHING FOR NEXT TIME

Not everything has to disappear when a run ends.

As you earn the bartender's trust, you can unlock more storage space and leave valuable Artifacts in his care. Stored Artifacts are protected from opportunistic wizards while you are unconscious, and your storage progression carries across runs.

Decide what to gamble, what to carry, and what is worth protecting for the future.
