What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Chinese Board & Card Games Museum is built around rule fidelity, regional variation, and long-term cultural preservation. Early Access lets us put playable versions in front of players while we continue validating rule edge cases, regional house rules, AI behavior, UI clarity, and online play. Many Chinese card and Mahjong games have local customs that are not always documented, so feedback from players who know these games from real tables is essential.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently plan for roughly 3 to 6 months in Early Access, depending on community feedback and the amount of rule, AI, online, and usability polish needed. We plan to leave Early Access when the core collection, rule documentation, solo/local play, selected online features, and Steam integration feel stable enough for a full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version focuses on the playable museum core: traditional Chinese card and board games, solo play against AI, local play, rule explanations, configurable variants for selected titles, visual themes, and initial Steam multiplayer support.

For the full version, we plan to improve rule coverage and regional variants, polish the public game catalog, expand tutorials and rule references, improve AI behavior, refine online lobbies and replay/feedback tools, and add or expand Steam features such as achievements and cloud saves where appropriate. We may also add more games as research and testing complete.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current build is playable. Players can browse the museum, launch supported games, play solo against AI, use selected rule variants, and read rule/context material. The rules engine and game modules are actively maintained, with ongoing work on rule corrections, AI tuning, UI polish, and online play.

Players should expect some Early Access rough edges: not every regional variant is final, some online features are still being tested, tutorials and onboarding are still improving, and rule details may be updated when reliable community feedback or better sources surface.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not currently plan a large price increase at or after the full release. If the scope grows substantially with more games, features, or Steam integration work, we may review pricing before full release and communicate any change in advance.

The game is planned as a premium buy-once product. We do not plan gameplay-affecting purchases, paid power, loot boxes, gambling, betting, or real-money card mechanics. If optional cosmetic content is offered in the future, it will be cosmetic only and clearly disclosed in advance.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use Steam discussions, bug reports, reviews, and replay/feedback codes to guide development. Community feedback will help us prioritize rule corrections, regional variant support, AI behavior, online issues, usability improvements, and which games should receive deeper polish next.

We also plan to publish patch notes, document disputed regional rules instead of silently changing core behavior, and invite players to share local rule sources or stable reproduction cases when something feels wrong.”

About This Game

Welcome to the Chinese Board Game Museum

A living archive of Chinese board, card, and tile game culture. Classic games from across China, from palace tables to hutong alleyways, bringing together centuries of folk wisdom. Every game is researched from historical sources, implemented with hand-written rules, and verified by the community to faithfully restore the distinctive play styles of different regions.

Four Curated Categories

  • Shedding Games — China’s most popular type of card game. Race to empty your hand through combinations of card patterns.

  • Trick-Taking Games — Team-based contests where strategy comes first, and every trick hides another layer of play.

  • Mahjong Games — Regional Mahjong rules from many places, each with its own scoring system and style of play.

  • Special Games — Unique local games you will not find elsewhere.

Faithfully Recreated, Worthy of Trust

Every game in this collection goes through:

  • Dual-source historical research — each game’s rules are cross-checked against at least two independent sources

  • Hand-written rule implementation — no vague automatically generated rules; every edge case is handled explicitly

  • Regional variant support — switchable options recreate local “house rules” and family play styles

  • Ongoing updates and maintenance — rules are corrected as new sources are discovered, with every change recorded in the update log

Multiple Ways to Start Playing

  • Play Against AI — Adjustable AI opponents, from beginner level to tournament strength. Some games include neural-network-based models trained on tens of millions of games.

  • Steam P2P Multiplayer — Create or join rooms through Steamworks networking.

No Ads. No Tricks.

Buy once and own it forever. All games, all variants, all updates — everything is included. We believe good software should respect your time and attention. This is a cultural preservation project first, and a product second.

A Museum That Keeps Growing

The Chinese Board Game Museum is an ongoing project. As rule research continues, new games will be added regularly; existing games will also continue to receive rule fixes, AI improvements, and visual polish. Your purchase directly supports the recording and preservation of China’s folk board, card, and tile game traditions.
