What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The Races is a party game at heart, and those are best shaped by people actually playing them. The core game is complete and playable, but we need real people and real groups to help us tune the betting, the economy, to tell us which bits of the world they want to see more of, and to help us decide what comes next. Early Access lets us do that without guessing.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We'd love to only be in Early Access for up to a year, but can see 18 months being a possibility.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to grow The Races into a weird, charming mix of party game and lore-rich world. Plans for the full version include:

- A much deeper web of hidden lore and narrative to uncover across the broadcasts.
- Horse personalities, so each horse has quirks that make them better in certain scenarios, and a weather system to really utilise them.
- Larger lobbies for bigger groups, including a dedicated streamer mode for our friends on Twitch.
- New ways to play including legacy modes so horses and history carry on between sessions.
- More achievements, new music, and new characters in the universe of the game to meet.

These are our current big plans, but they live and die on the feedback we get from the Early Access period.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“It's fully playable from the moment it goes live. One person needs to own the game, and every other play takes part on their phone or other browser based device. No other apps or software needed. Players can experience:

- Thrilling betting action on six different race types, including the Grand National.
- A functional horse market where players can buy, sell, and train their horses.
- A simulated Lottery, where big jackpots can be won, including predictions from the mystical Psychic Patricia.
- Up to 10 bot players for those sessions where you want to play alone.

Games comfortably run up to 10 human players (and bots if you want!), and we also have over 40 Steam achievements ready to unlock.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, but not by a lot. When we release from Early Access into full 1.0, we'll be raising the price by at most 50%, but this won't lock anyone out of any content that got there before. Full version for anyone who got us to that point via Early Access, no hidden extra costs.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“When The Races enters Early Access, we'll open our Discord server so players can talk with us directly about the game's future. We plan to run regular polls, share sneak peeks of upcoming features and chat informally with players about what needs tweaking or expanding. We'll also read and respond to feedback on Steam. The game is nothing without the people playing it, and we want them involved as it grows.”

About This Game

The Races is a horse racing party game for as many players as you've got, or just you and a field of bot players.

It's broadcast on your computer or TV in glorious Teletext-era resolution. The horses aren't real, the money isn't real, but the emotional rollercoaster very much is.

One person owns the game and hosts. Everyone else joins from their phone (or any device with a browser) using the web address and room code on screen. Place bets, buy a horse, train it, enter it into races, sabotage someone else's, and watch it all come together on the big screen, with live* commentary from the RACEFAX commentary team.

It's perfect for the living room at a party, a Discord call with your most competitive friends, or watching your mate who takes everything too seriously lose it over a fake horse falling at a digital fence.

*Commentary is generated in the game from what's happening in the race.

A fully simulated fixed-odds betting system. Prices update every 15 seconds while betting is open, based on each horse's form, how much money is going on it, and over a thousand simulated races run in the background. Every horse gets the price it deserves, but whether it deserves to win is another matter.

Between races, the market opens. Buy a horse outright and it's yours for the night. Train it to raise its Speed, Stamina and Safety. Enter it into the next race, and get paid if it wins or places.

Short on coins? The loan shark is always open, and always patient.

If you love a bit of subterfuge, bribe the jockey of a horse nobody owns to have an off day. Just don't get caught, or the Stewards will be having a word.

Buy tickets for the RACEFAX Lottery and win a jackpot that could catapult you into the lead. Every session gets a freshly generated race card, so no two nights are ever the same.

The big one. Twenty horses, all with glory in their sights. The longest race of the night, with seven perfectly placed fences.

On average, half the field won't make it round. Thousands of coins go to the owner of the winner if they were brave enough to enter.

Between races, get a glimpse into this strange universe. Catch up on the news ticker, get next week's winning* lottery numbers from Psychic Patricia, or take a HOT TIP straight from the RACEFAX desk.

*RACEFAX do not take responsibility for incorrect predictions.

Uncle Tote walks everyone through the game as it happens, so nobody has to sit through an explanation before the first race. Want to change how the night plays? The house rules let you limit bets, switch the market off, rein in the loan shark and more.

One PC or Mac runs the session. Plug it into a TV, share it on a Discord call (other VOIP services are available), or huddle round one laptop like the good old days. Players join on their own devices through our website with the room code the game gives them. No app downloads, no accounts.

Play solo against bot players, or fill the room with friends.

You set how long a session runs, from 15 minutes up to three hours.

For a full, meaty night we recommend 90 to 120 minutes, and at least 30 minutes for a quick one.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The Races is a horse-racing party game with simulated betting throughout. Players use in game coins (no real money or purchased entry) to bet on outcomes of horse races, run a stable, and occasionally exert questionable influence over a race outcome. The game references real-world betting environments visually and structurally, and the betting/economy loop is central to the experience.

The game contains adult humour, occasional mild swearing, and a deadpan comedic register that touches on death, crime, mental health, and other adult topics in passing. Horse names and commentary include innuendo and dark-comedy references.

There is no depicted violence, gore, nudity, or sexual content. There is no real-money gambling, no microtransactions, and no chance-based purchases (ie. lootboxes).
