What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“StringTheory depends on real-world hardware and user setups in a way most games do not. It is built around live guitar and bass input, audio devices, microphones, instrument cables, controllers, and imported song files from multiple chart ecosystems. Early Access gives us the chance to gather feedback from players using different guitars, pickups, audio interfaces, microphones, controllers, PCs so we can keep improving detection quality, latency, compatibility, and overall usability before full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect StringTheory to remain in Early Access for around 6 to 12 months. The exact timeline will depend on feedback, hardware compatibility testing, performance improvements, and how quickly the remaining planned features reach release quality.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to include further improvements to note and chord detection, broader hardware validation, more polish across gameplay and UI, stronger onboarding for different input setups, additional content and presentation improvements, and continued expansion of practice and rhythm features. The main goal is to make the game more reliable, polished, and easier to use across a wide range of real player setups.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version already includes real guitar and bass gameplay with live single-note and chord detection, scoring, loop practice, note-by-note mode, speed control, imported song support, rhythm/arcade gameplay, local multiplayer rhythm play, and built-in tone tools. It is fully playable now, but we are still improving performance, compatibility, balance, detection behavior, and polish across different hardware and song formats.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We may increase the price after Early Access as the game becomes more complete and polished. Players who join during Early Access will get access to the game as it grows and improves throughout development.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is especially important for StringTheory because the game relies on real instruments and varied audio hardware. We want feedback from players using different guitars, basses, pickups, microphones, USB cables, audio interfaces, controllers, and custom song libraries. Community testing will help us improve detection quality, latency, compatibility, difficulty balance, practice tools, and overall workflow. We plan to use player feedback to guide updates, fixes, and feature priorities throughout Early Access.”

About This Game

StringTheory is a guitar practice game that turns your own song library into playable challenges. Import supported song files (or use the included songs), pick a part, and play along while the game listens to your instrument in real time with live single-note and chord detection. Your performance is scored as you play..

Built for both learning and replay, StringTheory lets you load your own songs and work on them your way. Use Loop Mode to repeat difficult sections, Note By Note Mode to stop at each note or chord until you hit it, and speed controls to slow songs down while you learn. In addition to real instrument gameplay, the game also includes a rhythm mode for supported chart formats, with keyboard and gamepad support. Whether you want to drill one solo, practice rhythm parts more cleanly, or just play through your favorite charts, StringTheory is designed to make practice faster, clearer, and more fun.

Key features

  • Play with a real guitar or bass using live single-note and chord detection

  • Earn a score based on how accurately you perform

  • Import your own songs from supported chart and notation formats

  • Create and edit your own charts in the built-in editor, with a live 3D preview, guitar techniques, beat mapping, and tone switches

  • Use Loop Mode to repeat any section for focused practice

  • Use Note By Note Mode to stop at each note or chord until you play it

  • Adjust playback speed to learn difficult passages more easily

  • Includes a rhythm/arcade mode with keyboard and gamepad support

  • Connect an electronic drum kit over MIDI and play full drum charts, with every pad mapped from kick to crash
