About This Game

Just you, your ship, and a lot of rocks

Somewhere past Mars a mothership cuts its main engines and settles into orbit. You take a small

ship out of the bay, with a gun on the nose and a hold to fill. Everything else out here is rock,

and it does not stay that way.

Shoot a rock long enough and it comes apart into smaller rocks, and the break pays out: ore for

the hold, hardware for the ship. A wider gun mount, colder radiators, a harder boost, a deeper

bay. The gun overheats, nothing on the hull grows back on its own, and ore is worth nothing

until it is unloaded at the mothership. So every run is the same bet: one more rock, or turn

for home while the hull holds. What you found lasts as long as the ship does.

The belt is not empty

Something stocked this place. Break a big enough rock and a crab comes out of it, startled for a

whole second and then jumping at the nearest solid thing, which is sometimes you. Nothing

scheduled that. You quarried the landmark, so you made it happen.

Squid latch onto the plating and stay. Their full-grown relatives are twenty times the size and

arrive behind a fistful of arms. Whales strain dust in the deep field and mostly do not care. And

there are other ships out here, and they did not come to mine.

The annoying part

JX-9 runs the avionics, and JX-9 has gone rogue in the least useful way available to a spacecraft:

he has decided he is a DJ. He reads you the controls on the way out of the bay, and then he puts

music on that nobody asked for. A few minutes later he wants to know whether you like it, and when

the answer is not the one he was after, he notes that the poor meatbag is stuck out here with bad

taste, and that the settings row is right there if you feel strongly.

Every word of it out loud, in English or Italian. There is a row for turning him down. He has an

opinion about that too.

One sector, and the ones next to it

A run is flown inside a sector: a bubble ten thousand units on a side that closes on itself, so

flying far enough in any direction brings you back in on the opposite face. Somewhere in it is a

wormhole leading on, and sometimes two or three. No two throats whirl the same way, and the two

ends of one are two views of the same object. Take a mouth and the mothership follows you through,

and the belt on the far side is one nobody has flown.

Two looks, one world

The same scene draws two ways and a settings row swaps them without leaving the flight: glowing

wireframe at your display's own resolution, or dithered pixels through a palette. Same rocks, same

run, two different games to look at.

Two to four on one screen

Local split-screen for up to four pilots: two and three side by side, four in a grid. Every pilot

after the first needs a controller. Friendly fire is on by default, and it is a setting for a

reason.
